2 versions and update

I tried downloading Defender a few days back and there were 2 files; one
dowloaded OK, the other told me that it couldn't be installed and to contact
the software provider(?) - about 15 MB all up! I removed both versions and
now only see one file to be downloaded on the Microsoft website, which I have
done BUT I have no update button, just an option for Defender to update
automatically before a scan. Is this right? Also, should there be a shortcut
bar on the desktop?; at this stage I have to go to Programs to open Defender
each time. I prefer the previous Antispyware program - no problems there! I
don't know if Defender is runnng correctly.

All sounds well. The installer has been improved, and there's only one
download now, I believe. It also works better on non-English Windows
versions,

Your observations about updates and the icon are normal--there will be no
icon unless attention is needed. At some point in the future, there will be
a rev to allow the icon to be displayed, but the default will remain as it
is.

Updates come via autoupdate or Windows or MicrosoftUpdate. You can trigger
them manually via Help, about, check for updates, and there is an option to
update automatically before a scheduled scan which is on by default.
There's also a command-line process which does scanning and updates which
you can run or schedule yourself--mpcmdrun.exe
