I just removed my McAfee and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials, which
includes Defender. Do I have to update Defender separately, or will it be
updated automatically?

MSE replaces (and covers more than) Windows Defender, meaning Defender
should be uninstalled.

When you install MSE, Defender should be disabled on Vista/7 or
removed on XP. If that did not happen, you should do so. Having both
active creates a conflict situation.
