2 routers, everything works but wireless access

My setup

DSL----BEFSR41 (wired 4 port linksys)----BEFW11S4 (Wireless router)
| | | |
--- --- --- ---
| | | |
Linux W2K W98 Windows XP (wireless)

All three wired boxes work perfectly, but the wireless windows xp box
cannot be pinged and cannot ping anything. I've tried dhcp from the
wired router, static IP on the XP laptop.

The XP laptop cannot ping anything, not 192.168.1.1 (wired router) and
not 192.168.1.254 (wireless router) or any other machine on the
network.

It's a work laptop, so I've configureed the alternate configuration
tab and put in the gateway as 192.168.1.1 and a static ip as well as
the dns's.

Since the W98 box works without any problems, I'm leaning towards the
XP wireless settings. (Which says it's connected, BTW).

I stop SecureRemote and disabled the built in adapter in the laptop. I
disabled WEP to rule that out.

Here's the status from my wireless router

are Version: 1.45z, Feb 28 2003

Login:
Disable

LAN:
(MAC Address: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX)

IP Address: 192.168.1.254

WAN:

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
DNS: XXX.XXX.XX.X

And the status from the wired one

Firmware Version: 1.45.7, Jul 31 2003

Any ideas?

Hi Mike

First, Ive never had this configuration to set up so I'll be guessing at how
to configure it too. You're trying to use a wireless router rather than a
wireless access point to join the two together, afaik 2 routers are used to
join 2 different subnets together.

Have you joined them on the lan ports using an uplink port or crossover
cable?

First of all, CheshireCat, thank you very much for your help.

Very interesting question. My house is really small, and I would use
the wireless router only but it doesn't reach places in the house I
would like touse the laptop.

I followed the instructions at linksys for hooking up two routers.
Maybe I need to read more about setting up my wireless router as an
access point only?

Connecting a Wireless Linksys router to a regular Ethernet Linksys Router:

http://kb.linksys.com/cgi-bin/om_is...cess point]]]&infobase=linksysrev.nfo&record={443}&softpage=IKW_ENU_JDocView

To physically connect the two wires I followed their directions:

"Physically connecting the two routers

Take a straight through Ethernet cable and connect it to a regular port
on your main router, and plug the other end into the Uplink port on your
Wireless Router (If your wireless router does not have an uplink port,
try a regular port)."

The 98 box can ping either router and surf with no problems. The
wireless XP laptop can't do anything.

Hi Mike,
As linksys say at the top of the page, they would advise an access point
rather than another router.
What they're describing on that page is disabling the usual router
functionality and hoping it'll work as a switch. To connect hubs/switches
you use a crossover cat5 between two normal rj-45 ports, or a regular cat5
between a linkup port on one to a non-linkup port on the other router.
On the other hand, the wireless router has 4 rj-45 ports. Why can't you just
swap out the wired router with the wireless one? The other pcs should be
able to plug in as usual. Or are you trying this as an exercise?

If I were in your situation, I'd first set up the whole thing on the
wireless router alone - including internet connectivity. Try to get the
hybrid network working completely so that you know your Wireless pc works
ok. Then try again later with your improvised wireless switch.

Well, I finally figured it out so I thought I'd post the solution that
worked for me.

First a Summary:

DSL Modem --- LinkSys BEFSR41 ---- LinkSys BEFW11S4
| | | |
Linux W2K w98 XP Pro (WireLess).

I needed to set up the wireless router (BEFW11S4) as a Wireless Access
Point(WAP).

To do that, follow these unbelieveably great instructions at:
http://theblackmoor.net/router/

Once, that was done I had to do the following:

1. Disable Checkpoint SecureRemote on my network properties
2. Disable NWLink NetBIOS
3. Enable NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

Thanks for the help, CheshireCat.
