16 bit Subsystem problem

I am running XP Home, SP2 installed, all updates installed.

I have a 16 bit game I have been playing in Win 95 Compatability mode
ever since I got my present computer with XP installed, at least three
years ago. (I've had this since Win 3.1 was king!, and have not found
anything that I enjoy quite as much.)

Starting a couple of days ago the program began freezing. After
watching "not responding" in the Task Manager for a few minutes, I
have hit "End Task". It continues to hang up, until I get an error
message that "NTVDM.exe" is non-responsive, and asking me to submit
the report to Microsoft. Which I have done at least three times, and
got no response.

I then get a message saying the 16 bit subsystem may be unstable, and
recommends I close the program, which of course I have been trying to
do! It offers an "OK" or a "Cancel" button. So I hit the OK button,
and the program ends. I have rebooted and tried again, with identical
results. The program freezes.

Hopefully there is a way to fix this without re-installing Windows.

All advice gratefully received.

Thank You

Hi seeker,

Instead of reinstalling Windows, have you tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the program you are having problems with?

Also in order to enjoy the program, but only if you have the Windows 3.1
operating system, still on floppies or CD, have you attempted to Dual-boot
between 3.1 and Windows XP Home Edition?

Hi seeker,

Instead of reinstalling Windows, have you tried uninstalling and

First, thanks for the response and advice. And please forgive the
delayed response.

There really is no specific unistall for this program. It simply
unpacks into it's folder. There is no entry in the "Add/Remove" list
in Control Panel.

I had previously deleted the folder, and after rebooting, reinstalled
it. Which did not solve the problem.

But after reading your response I then went a bit further, searched
for any refererence to the program I could find. I came up with half a
dozen "documents and settings" entries, as well as an .INI file in the
windows directory. I deleted all of these, as well as the program's
folder. I then rebooted and reinstalled. And so far so good.

I say "so far" because it sometimes has taken a while for the program
to freeze. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

And thanks again

seeker
