1394 not recoginizing video camera

I have a DVD burner and my digital video camera hooked up
to 1394 jacks. Now the computer won't recognize the video
camera. I have Service Pack 2 loaded, which I thought had
some fixes for that problem but it's not working. I've
tried deleting and reinstalling drivers but no luck.
Anyone run into this problem or know of a solution.

Sony DCR-TRV820 will not connect

I have a DCR-TRV Camcorder which I had been using to capture Video for
editing on a Gateway Essentials 500, Window 98SE before upgrading my editing
Software up to Videowave 5. The reason I put this in is very important.
Because before purchasing a Dell Dimension 2350 desktop with Windows XP, the
Camcorder and Computer worked Fine!
Using the 1394 firewire and Sony Camcorder connected to the Dell
Desktop I was unable to connect to the Camcorder. Here is a “Glitch†to be
explained later. After almost a hundred hours trying to solve the problem I’m
finally there. Sony, Dell, Microsoft support leaves “a lot to be desired†and
I’m still waiting on a Call back from Dell! After reading all of the forums
I’m not going to be very long explaining this because it seems as if you all
are pretty much on track.
1. When I first connected the Camcorder to the Computer a pop up Window
appeared and it gave me 2 options. 1. Movie Maker(Windows can always run this
program). And Option #2(take no action). I chose option #2 (take no action).
and that Window has not appeared again until just a few minutes ago.
2. My problem was Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Drivers. In my Dimension Desktop “Device Manger†I only had 2:
1394BUS.SYS
OHCI1394.SYS
3. Go to this Website for further information required for DV Camcorder
and Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller Drivers for
your Windows XP to recognize.

3. According to ramelectronics 5 drivers are required:
The files you need are:
1394BUS.SYS
DVCAM.INF
DVCAM.SYS
OHCI1394.SYS
Usb001.exe (I did not find this driver: maybe it was
combined with another
Driver file) Sometimes
manufacturers rename “files†and
“Driversâ€
Finally this is what I did:
1. Download drivers from ramelectronics website on to floppy. Remove Floppy
2. With computer on Uninstall “Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394
Host Controller†in the “Device Manger†Window
3. Turn Computer “Off†and physically remove card
4. Turn computer on and “Verified†the “Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant
IEEE 1394 Host
Controller†was uninstalled in the “DEVICE MANAGER†and shut off computer

5. Physically reinstall IEEE 1394 PCI CARD in a different PCI SLOT
6. Turned on COMPUTER and went to Device Manager. Windows had already
installed the Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Drivers. Note: “everything that was done has been done as “Administrator†by
the time I turned the COMPUTER ON and LOGGED ON as ADMINSTRATOR the 1394 Card
and DRIVERS had already Been “Installed†In the “Device Managerâ€
7. I checked Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Drivers installed:
Here are the Driver Names of the
Files Installed
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\1394bus.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\arp.1394.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\enum1394.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\nicsys1394.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\ohci1394.sys

8. I then connected the Camera and then the same thing happened as before
“My Software nor Windows saw the Sony Camcorder.
9. Unplugged the firewire from the computer
10. I then went back to the “Device Manager†checked Texas Instruments OHCI
Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller and “Choosing†UPDATE…BROWSE….Drive A(the
floppy disk).
11. This is tricky. You will see one “file or folder†in the Windows Dialog
Box and another in File Open Box, Maneuver through trying to get those files
to download…..it probably won’t be easy but stay here on steps 10 and 11
until you see those files download. I did. And when it all stopped about 5
seconds.
12. I dragged back over to my Sony DCR-TRV820 and plugged the firewire in
and turned the CAMERA ON:
13. The speakers went….. DUNG….BING…..BONG
14. I returned to the computer and There was two messages a “Window†whos
message said:

Record Video(using Windows Movie Maker)
Take no action………….I say Do not choose
this option
15. Let Windows Movie Maker download a little clip and close it out
16. Now I have my camera and computer working

I really would like to try the method you described. I've had this problem
for a year, though the circumstances might be slightly different in that I
had a ! with the IEEE 1394 before I had camera detection problems. My
question is:

Do these directions apply to a system with Service Pack 2??

In regards to step 10 and 11, exactly how did you do that? I can't get my
computer to download a driver they deem "unrelated" to the hardware. Please

I am having no success whatever getting my firewire adapter(s) to
recogognize my Sony DCR-PC1 DV camera.

I have tried all of the fixes that I have seen on other boards/forums -
backing down to XP SP1 1394 drivers - without success. I have tried a new
cable and two diferent 1394 adapters - one with VIA chipset and the other
with TI. No matter what I do, my camera is not recognized. I have no other
Firewire device to connect, but my camera worked fine on my older systme with
a dedicated DV Capture card (Canopus).

The VIA chipset adapter that I used was a USB/1394 combo adapter on which
the USB ports worked fine (not with my camera, which only has 1394 I/O).

I am running WinXP SP2 (except for the down graded 1394 drivers).

Any suggestion you might have would be much appreciated.

I am hoping you might have some suggestions for me regarding my inability to
connect my Sony DVR-PC1 camera via 1394 adapter under WinXP. It is just
never recognized as being connected.

I have researched all the forums and boards, and tried everything that
others have had success with, to no avail.

I am running WinXP SP2. I have tried 2 different known good DV cables, 2
newly purchased 1394 adapter cards - one VIA based, the other TI based - I
have backed the 1394 drivers down to XP SP1 versions (ensuring that they are
not automatically updated to SP2 drivers upon boot). The VIA-based adapter
was a USB/1394 combo, on which the USB ports worked fine. In Device Manager,
the adpaters show up as being installed and working properly.

I am at my wit's end.

My DV camera worked fine on my now obsolete and cannibalized W2K system with
a dedicated DV capture card (Canopus).

I followed your link above to the RAM Electronics site, but the links to
which you referred are now invalid. Besides, the 1394 info discussed on that
site seemed to relate to Win98.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be much appreciated.

OK, so now I am even further confused!

Today I brought my DV camera and Firewire cable to the office. I plugged it
into a co-worker's Dell laptop 1394 port. Lo and behold, the camera is
recognized.

I then checked the O/S (XP SP2), and the 1394 driver (as loaded by XP SP2).

Why do you think the operation of 1394 driver is so system dependant?

I am grasping at straws here, but could this knowledgebase article relate to
the non-recoginition of 1394-connected DV cams? What I'm asking is if the
speed being reset to S100 could impact device recognition on a 1394 port? Or
does that only have effect after connection with the device is established?

Service Pack 2
SYMPTOMS
After you update your computer to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2),
the performance of your 1394a or 1394b FireWire devices may be greatly
decreased. A digital camera that uses S400 speed is an example of such a
device.

This problem occurs if you connect a 1394a or 1394b FireWire device to a
1394b port. This problem occurs because Windows XP SP2 changes 1394b ports to
S100 speed when you upgrade.

Hey Graham, which ports on the firewall does firewire use, and how do
you open the ports?

If you are referring to the possibility of MS XP Firewall blocking 1394
ports, in my case I have disabled XP Firewall. I use ZoneAlarm, which I also
disabled for troubleshooting this 1394 connection problem.

BTW, I have logged a support call with MS. I'll share the outcome of that
case.

O.K. Here's the deal; if you have Sp2 installed you _have_ to block SP2
from re-loading it's drivers by renaming a folder called SP2.cab to
SP2cab.old
Then do this;

Go to C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 & C:\dllcache in SP1 and copy out
the
following files
SBP2port.sys is in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers & \system32\dllcache
1394bus.sys is in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
arp1394.sys is in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
nic1394.sys is in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers
ohci1394.sys is in C:\windows\System32\drivers
enum1394.sys is in C:\windows\system32\drivers

Copy out the following files to a new folder you can call
"Firewirefix," (without quotes)

Stop XP Sp2 from re-installing it's drivers again by:
Renaming the XP2.cab file to (e.g. to XP2old.cab)

Replace the SP2 versions of these files with the SP1 versions in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers & C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache in safe
mode.

Go to device manager for your ohci firewire card and update SP2 drivers
to the SP1 drivers by pointing to Firewirefix.(warning message normal)
Reboot.
