I am using a 1394 Card OHCI compliant (ADS Pyro 1394 Card for laptop) a Sony
Digital Video Camera Recorder DCR-TRV460 NTSC, Windows XP, going thourgh
"Ilink". I connect the camera and see "DV in" on the screen. If I turn off
camera I hear a beep; but I see no hour glass or does the T-43 IBM laptop
seem to recognize this device. The card and controller are both listed in
the device manager as working properly. Does anyone have a clue as to the

What problem do you think there is?
Normally once a Firewire device is connected and powered up,
you should receive an onscreen prompt with several options as
to what software you want to open?
This maybe disabled, nontheless, with your DV cam connected
and powered, open *any* capture software, and select "Capture"
your Sony DV cam should be listed as an attached device.
The software has capture controls, and you select where to
save captured footage, name/title, etc. It's the capture software
that controls attached firewire cam's such as your Sony.
Try Windows Movie Maker
Connect cam, power it, set to "vcr" mode
Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Windows Movie Maker

Just remain aware that "pure uncompressed" DV-AVI
footage will take up vast amounts of HDD space,
So capture in short 10 min sections until you get the
gist of it all.

Decoder, Thanks for the message, This is really driving me crazy. You seem
to understand the process. I have tried 3 different software applicaiton
programs, including Windows Movie Maker, Pinnacle Studio 9, etc. all give the
same message: They cannot see the Camera / input device. They tell me to
trun it on and make sure it is properly connected, which I have done many
times. I don't get an onscreen prompt asking me what software I want to
open. I have been told that I need a driver. The 1394 card is working and I
can see that it is installed properly. On the Camera I see "DV in" when the
firewire cable is pluged in and this disappears when removed, so I know that
the Camera is seeing the computer. Do you have any idea where else I should
look?

I'm unfamiliar with that specific Sony, but.........
As you state your cam's display indicates that the cam is set to "DV-IN",
then rummage around the menu's to see if there is an option for "DV-In/Out
Or, your Sony may have individual settings for "In" and "Out"?
With Sony's, it will be accessiable via button marked "Menu" which will
display options on the Cam's in-built LCD display. The Sony's I know of
use a scroll-wheel to select options, once you've located the option to
activate "DV-OUT", usually it involves pressing the scroll wheel to
alternate
between "In" or "Out", or "On/Off" etc
Below is a link to the Sony support site for your specific DV cam,
On the link for "Troubleshoot connection problems" it states emphatically
that the "DV-OUT" option *must* be selected without the cam being
connected to the PC's iLink/Firewire socket.
There is also a link under the heading "Getting Started" from which
you maybe able to download a replacement instruction manual.

able to guide you on configuring your Sony DV camcorder.

All you need to figure out is how to activate the "DV-Out" option on that
cam,
then connect it to your PC, it will then be recognised.

Dear Decorder,
I do not think it is a problem with the Sony Carmera, I have all the
original manuals and software. The "DV-in" is only an indication, here is
the quote from the manual:
"The DV in indicator appears when you connect your camcorder and other
devices via an iLINK cable." I looked an the 'Menu' in great detail and the
is no "DV-out". The system worked as it should until I changed from Windows
2000 to XP; but I do not think this is the problem. I had the same issue in
Windows 2000; but a "Tech" made some adjustment to the operating system that
allowed these products to work. I aksed him what he did and he no longer
remembers. I believe that something is blocking this funtion. I went to the
Web site and have searched and searched of any clue, and have not found any
thread. Thanks for your help, I'm still looking.

Unless you can prove your cam and cable are working with another pc, you
cannot rule out they are faulty. The same for the firewire port in the pc,
just because device manager lists it as present and ok, unfrtunately doesn't
mean it is. dv-in showing on the screen also does not mean the whole of the
connection is complete.

with net meeting (possible black border). I don't think this is the source
that I want (1394 card with driver); but this is all that is listed in the
pull-down menu. I have tried 3 different cables, 2 1394 cards, 3 software
applications, and other firewire devices like an ipod and dvd-rd/rw. I am
almost sure that it has something to do with the settings on Windows XP.
Before I went to Windows XP I was able to do the download with no problem. I
entered all applications in Firewall. I do not get initial ballon when

Hi Micheal,
I suspect GH elicited the probable cause, you've had your Sony DV cam
"modified"?
It is a puzzle to us all why the huge conglomerates produce a fundementally
identical
product, but to target price ranges? To do so they omit certain functions
etc
With DV cam's, one facility omitted from certain models is "DV-IN" (Whereby
we
can transfer edited digital footage back to DV tape.)
Your particular model lacked this facility? And you had it modified?
If so, I suspect your DV cam is now malfunctioning and is "locked" to
"DV-IN".
If this is the case, and it is indeed a "modified" Sony DV cam, I feel your
only
option is to place it with a certified Sony service agent for repair.
