100% CPU Util

I have three machines running winxp pro sp2, identical set up, and identical
problem. I have run the spyware and checked for viruses, dfrag, and clean my
disk, etc.
Here is my problem: I get 100% CPU utilization only when I copy something to
the clipboard and try to paste it. During this process all other work
freezes. Once the Paste is done, the CPU utilization goes back to 8-20%. Help.

Sounds like a memory shortage problem to me. But, since you didn't tell us
the specs of your computers, it is hard to tell for sure.

Neither my Dell Inspiron 6000 (with 1 GB memory) nor my Dell 4600 (with 512
MB memory) have this problem.

All of the machines are new with 1GB memory.

How big is your pagefile? Sometimes a system which is desparately short of
free memory will go into a tailspin trying to use a pagefile which is too
small. I have seen system hang as a result of this problem.

However, you ought not to have this problem with 1GB of ram.

I'm replying here because clicking on "NEW" gets me nowhere.

I have the following questions:
1) Why is MS losing my forwarded mail regarding a case?
2) Why is Hotmail flagging the following letter to (e-mail address removed) as
spam?
3) Why am I running at 100% cpu utilization for anything other than form
fields (as in this)?
4) How can I get the hotfix mentioned below?
5) Both links (email & address) provided by MS seem to be invalid

What follows below the "-----" is the message I forwarded to
(e-mail address removed). I am sending this to you because the first one I
sent on Oct 27th was, at best, miis-sent. Could you please look into the
problem I am having with cpu usage? It almost seems as though memory is
leaking everywhere. I usually have only one or two programs running in the
foreground at any given time (IE or Firefox and Outlook Express). In the
background, I have a firewall (ZoneAlarm), anti-virus software (AVG from
Grisoft) and (usually) an anti-spam program (eweido). For the most part, I
run IE with activeX & plug-ins disabled. I have no viruses nor spamware on
my system. In fact, it is virtually empty right now.

MESSAGE:

I forwarded the following on Oct 27th. It is in one of my hotmail folders.
Because I don't want to start cursing like a maniac, what follows is the
original message I forwarded.

Hi Rashmi,

The article that mentions a hotfix:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890582/en-us

my user32.dll is dated Mar 2, 2005
my win32k.sys is dated May 10, 2005

Problem:
1) cpu usage is virtually always at 100%, with majority of percentage (50+%)
being taken by program in the forefront, services, and/or DPCs).
2) when running sound (Window Media Player and/or offline games), the sound
'skips/stutters', consumes all usage and either requires waiting anywhere to
a 1/2 hour or a cold boot (pulling the plug) to regain control
3) when cpu usage is 100%, web pages take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes to
load; programs take longer
4) minimized & closed windows leave 'ghosts' (the screen isn't immediately
refreshed)
5) when I 'Restart', rather than 'Turn off', the computer, programs in the
'startup' folder do not always take, so I now start all programs (outlook,
ie, anti-spyware, etc.) manually.

All of the above occurs at least 85% of the time (I am logged onto my
computer at least 12 hours/day).

When I run chkdsk from a dos prompt, I get the following message:
.....
security descriptor verification completed
chkdsk discovered file space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap
Windows found problems in the file system

If I run chkdsk/f when I reboot, it finds no problems.

Sys Info:
Compaq Presario 5000 (bought in 2001), Pentium 4 1.5 gHz, 256 RAM,
pagefile.sys set from 512-1024, nVidia Vanta LT, Windows XP Home SP2,
optimum online cable connection
