100% CPU usage

I am running Windows XP Home SP1.
I am unable to download files or receive email.
CPU usage is 100%
I ran McAfee antivirus scan in safe mode.
I ran spybot s & d 1.3 and removed the spyware/adware that it came up with.
Processes shows that McShield.exe is what's using all the
CPU.
I have removed temp files from Windows and cleaned them from Internet
Explorer as well.
I have checked the entries in Current User and Local Machine, Software,
Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Run, and they appear to be OK.
I am at a loss as to where to go from here.
Is McShield really the culprit?
Should I stop McAfee from starting up and see if my CPU usage remains 100%?
Or, am I to the point where I may as well clean the hard drive and start
from scratch? ( I really don't want to do this, if I don't have to, but I'm
a computer idiot).
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

No you will not need to start over.
The best thing to do would be to reinstall McAfee.
Turn on your ICF (firewall)
Go to Add & Remove programs uninstall all McAfee products, then reinstall,
register it and download the updated Dat Files (updates)

Here is a free virus scan just to double check.

hey just curious, do you have an I pod or any other external drive-like
accessory connected. I had the same problem as you. I was doing everything
I could think of to fix it, and in the end i ended up reinstalling windows
only to find out that I still had the same problem. I was sooo mad, and I
can imagine you are that I just disconnected the ipod to take a walk and
relax. Only to find out that my cpu usage was back down to 0! Anyway if you
have any extrenal maybe even maybe internal HDD type hardware, it could be
the problem. If windows can't access it, it will keep trying and trying like
hell, and your cpu usage will be at 100%.

Thanks for your response.
I've been unable to even look at the 'puter for the last day or so.
I don't have any external drives.
Not sure what internal drives should be checked, or how to check them. Do
you mean zip drive? CD - RW? DVD?
Thanks.
