100% CPU usage

hi hope someone can help..

I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1.74Ghz) on a system with 512mb ram and a 128mb GeForce 4 Ti4200 but every time i use a power intensive applications like games or ripping CD's in media player my CPU usage goes up to 100% and stays there until my pc reboots itself? surely my pc isn't underpowered? is there a cure for this

If it is not virus and/or spyware...
You may want to open Task Manager to see which process is going nut in your
computer.
It may be the Real Time Antivirus that is scanning the hard disk.

One time it happened like this, it was the My_Doom virus scanning emails
from the hard disk.
I found this out by looking at the Process List from the Task Manager.
I then copied the name of the procress and searched the web for information.
