0x8004210a error message when downloading email

i have a client (i am a computer consultant) who is using sbc dsl. she
has two sbcglobal.net email addresses that have been added to outlook
2003. about every 4th time she checks her email, she gets the
following error message:

" Reported error 0x8004210A. The operations timed out waiting for a
response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive
this message contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider ISP."

she is using a brand new dell latitude d810 notebook running windows xp
home edition. She has both a wireless and wired connection (she gets
the error message even when plugged into a wired connection on a port
replicator). her computer is connected to a dell 2350 wireless router
which is connected to a speedstream dsl modem.

She still seems to get the bulk of her email, but she thinks that some
people have sent her email messages that has never received.

To resolved the problem, I tried the following:

-checking her setting many times to confirm they are all correct. I
setup sbc email accounts under outlook all the time (including my own),
so I don't think any of these settings are incorrect. In addition, I
have tried deleting and reading the accounts under outlook. Settings
are pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, I remove
messages from the server after leaving them there for 5 days, I
authenticate outgoing email with the username/password of the email
account, etc.

-I have applied all the latest ms office updates

-I have increased the timeout value for sending/receiving email to 90
seconds.

-I have tried turning off the trend micro and microsoft firewalls

-I have tried removing and readding ms office

Everything else on her computer seems to work just great. any idea
what is causing this error message? this is a standard setup in
everyway, I have done this so many times and yet I never remember
seeing this error message. thanx for any comments you may have.

Also, the send/receive interval is way too short. It should not be anything
less than 10 minutes, otherwise it will step on itself, especially if one
account has a lot of mail or large mails.

People need to realize that getting mail continuously will strain your
system and the ISP. Can you really read every mail you get in 90 seconds
before new mail arrives and you have to read that? Using a reasonable (10
minute) send/receive schedule allows all operations on one account to
complete before it goes to the next account to poll for mail.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, (e-mail address removed) asked:
