dansheen: I took this one for a test drive. It is very easy to use,
and it does seem to deliver on its promise! I even supressed the
Realplayer programs that always seem to run at startup.

Good pick! I'll keep it!

Hi,

i have an old Go game called Handtalk, fits on 1 floppy. Costed a lot
of money few years agoo, a very nice board, but finally it was not
so strong : when you place many attacks all over the board, he lost
control :) it lost the overview of the whole board, that's the weak
point.

I shoukda' book marked the site to place here since it is rather buried
amongst similarly named programs:

Spry ImageView

A handy dandy nifty keen itty bitty picture manipulating thingy. Crop,
brighten, darken, change format, etc. Works great for basic photo
manipulations. Intuitive, easy to learn and free. Works on Win98, don't know
about XP.

I too Googled for this one and came up empty. Can you provide a link or make it
available for download? From what I could find, it is about 460 kb in size.

Is Spry ImageView a 16-bit or a 32-bit Application?

Rumor has it: That Spry ImageView is LView with the Spry name on it.

LViewPro32 could be a suitable substitute if it weren't $ware.

PHP Designer is a very nice development environment for those
interested in PHP coding:

http://www.download.com/PHP-Designer-2005/3000-7957_4-10362291.html?tag=lst-6-5

"The development environment combines many powerful features such as
customizable syntax schemes for PHP, HTML, XHTML, CSS, and SQL, a
class/include browser, test and debug your scripts with the PHP
interpreter, and integration of the PHP manual, parameter hint. It also
features the ability to autoindent brackets, automatically close
brackets, and grants access to common code/script libraries all
combined in this one unique program. PHP Designer 2005 includes extra
tools such as time-saving features like a FTP manager, a project
manager, a file manager, a To-Do manager, code templates, snippet
support, File format (Windows/Dos, Unix or Mac), export possibility to
LaTex, HTML, and RTF."

Very nice!

I can't get it to ping any of the servers but I am not in the US. Any
ideas?

Try a local time server instead of one in the US.

If you're in Canada, use time.nrc.ca
If you're in Australia, use time.optusnet.com.au

No, it just counts down and goes off.

I love this one:
Stats2000
This FREE disk utility collects numerous disk statistics for your personal
computer or network drives. The easy to use tabbed interface provides quick
and valuable information on

a.. file types
a.. creation dates
a.. file ages
a.. age distribution
a.. file size distribution
a.. wasted space
and more. All data is presented in attractive 3d graphs or in text grids for
exact numbers. Works over multiple disk drives.

Thanks Thip.

Does anyone know of a timer that can repeatedly count the same unit of time (up
or down) until stopped?

I'd just like to ask anyone to post the names of their favorite
little-known freeware programs. Please list as many or as few as you'd
like, and no need to have links to download sites: we can probably find
those easily enough.

One I use on a daily bassis is RunIt. Right-click on a screen border
(you choose) and a menu pops up allowing to to choose from your most
used programs. There's probably better but this is simple and does
what I want:

From the UK I use About Time http://www.arachnoid.com with the following
five servers.

Swiss Fed. Inst. of Technology swisstime.ethz.ch
Technische Universitaet Berlin ntps1-0.cs.tu-berlin.de
University Erlangen-Nuernberg ntps1-2.uni-erlangen.de
U.S. Naval Observatory tick.usno.navy.mil
NIST time.nist.gov

If it can't find the Swiss one it moves on to the others.

For a list of public time servers, see

Hi Brett:
Thanks for the URL. It seems to do job. It is quite an
elaborate program with all sorts of options! Now I have to figure out a
couple of things 1)how to show only the timer and not the clock 2) and
change the size of the numerals.

I appreciate your help in locating this lovely little program.

Hi All - I highly recommend NetTime here: http://nettime.sourceforge.net/
The nice thing about it is that it will automatically check 140 or so
servers, find those that are working, pick the "best" five for you, update
your time automatically at your designated interval by comparing all five
and has provision for updating other computers on a local net. Or you can
individually test and select the five to be used from servers around the
world. You can use it to either automatically set the time in your tray or
to do so manually. It is also very easy to add additional server addresses
to the .ini file. I've tried out a number of time set programs over the
years, and this is far-and-away the best.

Since free games are game on this list, I thought I might just share a
few favorites...

"Jardinains" is a truly delightful "breakout / arkanoid" clone -- with
a difference! In addition to the usual challenge of breaking all the
bricks (pong-style), these tiny elves occasionally emerge atop the
bricks and try to drop flowerpots on you! Sounds silly, and indeed it
is, but it's wonderfully fun! Every bit as enjoyable to adults as
kids, I find:

http://www.download.com/Jardinains/3000-2099_4-10246909.html?tag=lst-0-1

"Arcade Classic Pack" includes very good clones of Asteroids, Pac-Man,
Pong, Snake, Space Invaders, and Tetris. It is a very small program
(less than 500kb), and obviously very efficient with system resources.
I find that the Space Invaders clone is significantly easier than the
original (which was already fairly easy), so if you're in a mood to
just mindlessly play a game for a long, long time, you might enjoy it.
All the games are well done:

http://www.download.com/Arcade-Classic-Arcade-Pack/3000-2099_4-10395927.html?tag=lst-6-12

Though not a game itself, "Game Maker" enables you to make YOUR OWN
games, without doing any real programming!

"Game Maker allows you to make exciting computer games without the need
to write a single line of code. Using easy-to-learn, drag-and-drop
actions, you can make professional-looking games in no time. Games can
have backgrounds, animated graphics, music, and sound effects, and once
you get more experienced there's a built-in programming language that
gives you full flexibility. What's best, Game Maker can be used
completely free of charge, and you can use the games you produce any
way you like. You even can sell them."

Cheers!
