Your Favorite Little-Known Freeware?

My little gem is FileNote from Moonsoftware. I download a lot of
proggies, so this is a handy tool.

<quote>

FileNote is a little shell extension that allows you to add textual
descriptions to your files. It adds one command to the shell context
menu of a file object. This command lets you easily edit or create a
text file that has the same name as the initial file, but with the
extension TXT.
For example, if you have a file, MyImage.jpg, you right-click on that
file and choose the FileNote command from the context menu. A new text
file called MyImage.txt is created and Notepad is opened to edit that
text file. If a text file with that name already exists, it will be
opened for viewing/editing.

Looks interesting but:

requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.

In Firefox I use the "Send To" extension to send the selected text + URL,
date/time to a text editor (EditPad Lite for me) of choice.
The new text is inserted at the beginning of the file (maybe this will be
optional in the next version) and is automatically saved.

I'd just like to ask anyone to post the names of their favorite
little-known freeware programs. Please list as many or as few as you'd
like, and no need to have links to download sites: we can probably find
those easily enough.
well, the one that seems about to disappear is WatchCat.....it is in
only a few places anymore, and the author, Vassili Bourdos, seems to
no longer have a website...read about one man's use of it here ...
http://excastle.com/blog/archive/2004/10/26/452.aspx

or, here is an almost totally different view of it at
http://tucows.mundofree.com/preview/70177.html (where you can download
it..)(it was written years ago, but seems to work just fine under XP)

"WatchCat uses a menu to keep track of programs you are running,
letting you hide any running application from view. Application
windows that are hidden by WatchCat not only disappear from your
Windows desktop but also disappear from the Taskbar and from the list
of running tasks displayed by ALT-TAB.

To hide or unhide any application, simply right-click on WatchCat's
System Tray icon and select an application from the menu that appears;
applications that appear on the bottom of the menu are ones that are
currently hidden.

There are options to hide and show all windows and to hide or show
your desktop icons. Other options let you hide and unhide programs
using hotkeys or by right-clicking on any application's "minimize"
icon.

You can even set up timers which automatically hide or close windows
after a specified period of time. And this newest release lets you
minimize applications to the System Tray and protect hidden windows
with a password.

If you need to keep applications running but don't want them to become
obtrusive, this utility could become quite convenient for you."

Registrar Lite

A far superior registry editor I could not live without (software
development job). The best feature is search in that it finds ALL
occurrences, displays them in a child window and permits you to go back
and forth. Invaluable in ripping stuff out by hand when uninstalls fail
or don't exist.

You might also like this registry editor that has similar features :

"ceed"
OneClickPlay: Drop this little program in a folder with mp3's and execute
it. It generates a random playlist of the files in the folder and sends it
to your default player. Great if you have a lot of mp3s and do not want to
mess around with complicated playlist editors and such. You can of course
make shortcuts elsewhere for quick access. There are also some switches
you can use to have the program execute to your liking. Great, simple and
very useful.

This is an excellent program which I've used for years. You can copy the exe
file to any folder containing audio files (not just MP3s) and by clicking it
the files are played in random order. You can use as many copies of the exe
file as you need.

My 2 favorite text tools:

BabelPad, http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelPad.html

UNICODE-enabled text editor, very useful for those typing in languages like
Japanese, Chinese, Russian - or that need to insert mathematical symbols in
texts (like me).

*This is *not* a "programmer's text editor" with syntax highlighting,
indenting, etc...*

It sends to a text editor. I don't have Co-Citer but as far as I can see
it's not a text editor, so I don't think it could work.

It is free and fully functional, and there are no disabled features or time

Two graphics picks:

IrfanView is a wonderful program for viewing images FAST. I keep a
shortcut to it on my desktop, and whenever I want to view an image
INSTANTLY (or sift through a whole group of images quickly), I just
drag and drop them onto the icon. It opens as quickly as Notepad!
Seriously.

The Gimp might not qualify as little-known, though I think it is
little-known to Windows users (though widely known to Linux users). It
is not widely known that it also runs under Windows, making this
totally free, feature rich paint & photo program very versatile:

Bravo, ceed!!!

I just tried this out, and it works beautifully! A very small program,
each time you click the shortcut, it generates a new random playlist of
MP3s.

Excellent pick!

SizeOMatic: Allows quick resizing of windows. Great for testing your web
site or program design at different screen resolutions without actually
changing it (or for those like me who want your browser to be *precisely*

Thanks. And yes, it's a gem. Come to think of it. Before you play your
mp3s you should clean them. For that there's mp3trim (and wavTrim for
wavs). Also a tiny program (200k) but very powerful and totally free:

http://www.mptrim.com/index.html

I run this on all my mp3s and have uneccessary silence and other bad stuff
removed from the files. It logs every thing it does so you can see it
works. You can even see the file itself being reduced in size! Along side
OneClickPlay and a decent player a must for your musical toolbox in my
opinion.

The coolest music-composing freeware program I've seen is easily Anvil
Studio:

http://www.download.com/Anvil-Studio/3000-2170_4-10389338.html?tag=lst-0-1

I love the array of MIDI musical instruments it makes available! (My
favorite is the Glockenspiel.)

"Anvil Studio is a program for multitrack recording, composing, and
editing of music using digital audio, MIDI, and sampled percussion
sounds. Audio effects include delay, pitch change, volume change,
filtering, and reverse. Anvil Studio is designed for people who want to
perform music with MIDI equipment, or record and edit music with MIDI
and audio equipment or with a computer and sound card. It allows you to
record and edit a single stereo or mono one-minute audio track, and
create unlimited MIDI tracks. Optional accessories allow you to record
and mix up to eight stereo/mono audio tracks."

Totally impressive.
