xp windows explorer hangs

Clicking on any desktop icon, my computer for example, causes windows
explorer to go to 100% and hang there until I kill it with the task
manager. I can then restart explorer thru the task manager. It'll than
run "normally" until I click an icon. I can start a program thru the
taskmanager and sometimes through the start menu and the programs seem
to run ok. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Run the edit on line 157

If that doesn't help, download the Ad-aware zip file on line 308 and run all
of them: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Tried all of the above w/o any improvements. I killed everything that
starts, ran all the spyware removal programs, and, using the task
manager, stopped all the processess allowed. None of which helped.
I've got lots of stuff on the drive I can't afford to loose. I'm
thinking of getting another drive and installing the operating system
on it. Then as needed I can pull files off this drive. What a pain.
Gotta be a better way.
