xp start-up

my xp home edition will not start-up. That is to say that I
get a start-up screen but I get an error message telling me
that windows can't start and then it gives me
options....safe mode, latest config, normal start....none
of these work. My notebook goes into a 'loop' starting and
restarting but never getting a desktop. Someone suggested
an 'XP repair disc'. Would this work?

You may choose the following options in the order
mentioned:
1. Choose safe mode ... once u get to the desktop of the
safemode click :
Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system
restore -
And at this stage u may choose a date when the system was
working absoultely fine.
2.If the above fails u may choose the option that
reads "Last known Good Configuration "
3.If all the above fail use your Windows XP CD to boot to
the Recovery console and do a chkdsk /r

I have the same issue that started a few days ago. If I
try to boot using the "last successful boot" option, I get
4 seconds of XP splash screen followed by a quick blue
screen and then a restart. I used my Video recorder to
tape the blue screen and the freeze it so I could read
it. Basically said it was a stop error screen, that I
should disable or remove any recent changes and press F8
during boot up for other options.

Overall, I have a feeling I got a virus since my virus s/w
updates expired about a month ago. I have tried to boot
up in DOS and use FDISK, but it doesn't tell me much as
the disk is not FAT32. I also downloaded the NTFS boot
disk (www.ntfs.com) and it seems to see all the files just
fine. Did find that a few files were modified on 10-23-03
including c:\windows\compaq.reg and some advertising crap
that was downloaded. What does this file do? Which files
should I be looking at?

Also bought a new version of norton works, but it didn't
find anything either (although the updates might be a few
months behind in the off the shelf version).

Any other ideas?? Thanks!!

FYI..for me, none of the boot modes work to launch windows
(safe or last config). Unfotunately I have the OEM
windows so I do not have a boot disk that offers anything
other than a "wipe it clean and start over" option. The
partial reload option is not offered when the disk is
heavily damaged. That said, the NTFS reader reads all the
files on the disk just fine. Now if I could only get
windows to see the files...

I'm not familiar w/ the recovery console and don't know
what I'm looking for ...in order to run same.

Got my XPhome working by:
- borrowed a "real" XP CD (a windows '98 upgrade version
instead of my OEM garbage)
- booted from CD to the recovery console and used chkdsk
(it found some stuff, but I did not use the /R option
since I just wanted to see if it found anything before
correcting)
-did not observe any changes right then, but power cycled
and rebooted at bit later, and found that windows fired up
to the user login screen

Not exactly sure how I fixed it, but willing to accept my
fate....

Hope this helps someone.
