XP repair/inplace upgrade

hi all

Managed to get into recovery console via 6-disk boot (still no boot
record from cdrom)

I'm trying to replace files in c:\windows\system32\config but I can't
read, write to, copy or delete the config directory so I can't replace
files stopping XP from booting from HD - it just says 'An error
occurred during directory enumeration'

There's no Repair option on my XP setup (other than for Recovery
Console) - so if I go for reinstall from the CD but use Upgrade rather
than New Installation (i.e. inplace upgrade) will it still blitz
everything in My Documents etc.?

I'd rather not have to reinstall at all - so is there any way round my
config folder problem?

Also - how can I use the Recovery Console to fix the CDROM boot record
problem?

thanks - I followed all of that but still couldn't boot from my
newly-made cd - it'll be handy for next time though

It's working again now and I'm not sure why - I ran chkdsk and bootcfg
from the recovery console and it booted from IDE-0 next try with no
errors. So I'm very confused and still a bit wary...
