My computer will not boot. The system message is

Windows could not start because of the following file in missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTE

You may attempt to repair file by starting Windows Setup wusing the original Setup CD-ROM
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repai

I am running Windows XP. I have the CD-Rom that I installed the OS with. When I select 'r' it gives me two options:
1. windows xp setup 2. windows xp recovery console

When I select 2 - windows XP recovery console I get the C

What do I have to type at the C prompt to it to repair

I just recovered my computer from a corrupted registry by doing the steps in the knowledge base article# 307545 but i am unable to do step four (restore system to a previous RestorePoint)

If I go into Start/all programs/system tools/system restore I get the following error message: System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again

Restarting the computer does not fix the problem

If I go into the same as above a second time I get the Send Error Report box with the message: System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

If I go into Control Panel/Sysem and click the system restore tab I get the following error message

An exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Windows\System32\sysdm.cpl",System

Can someone please tell me what to do? I appreciate the help

Hi,

Start/rum services.msc, scroll down to the system restore service and
double-click it. If it shows as running, then stop it. Set the startup type
to disabled, then click apply/ok and reboot. Then open up services once
again and restart it.

The bad side is, you don't have any restore points, so you will not be able
to perform that step.
