XP Pro Display Properties> Appearance > Effects Button Not working

Hi

I have searched seeing several posts about this subject but can't
seem to find an answer for me. So as so many others have asked......

When I right click the Display and select properties, in the Appearance
Tab the Effects button does not work. I have not installed any kind of
desktop skin manager and not exactly sure when it happened. Any
suggestions?

Thankyou

Carl

Hi

Thanks for the reply I looked at the site and here is what I found
in my vs what is on the site, there are several things and wondered if
you would have a look at what I found before I try and start thrashing.
There are several differences.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

Carl,

The simple thing to do would be double click smoothscroll.reg to merge it
into your registry and then change a couple of things. But I understand
that you might have questions.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"SmoothScroll"=dword:00000001
"FontSmoothing"="0"
"FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000001
"UserPreferencesMask".... This one's complicated.

SmoothScroll, FontSmoothing and FontSmoothingType are available from the
Effects button, which doesn't work for you!!!

UserPreferencesMask handles: Enable combo box animation, Enable cursor
shadow, Enable list box animation, Enable menu animation, Enable menu
fading, Enable menu selection fading, Enable mouse hot tracking effects,
Enable tooltip animation, Enable tooltip fade and Show Windows version on
desktop.

Most of these are available from the Effects button, which doesn't work for
you!!!

See Table 5-1 Values in General...
here for values if interested, otherwise make whatever changes you want
later.
http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/sampchap/6232.asp

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\System]
"NoVisualStyleChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoColorChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoSizeChoice"=dword:00000000

All on the Appearance tab...
NoVisualStyleChoice - Disable the "Windows and buttons" style control if set
to 1.
NoColorChoice - Disable the "Color scheme" control if set to 1.
NoSizeChoice - Disable the "Font size" control if set to 1.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\System]
"SetVisualStyle"=-

The minus (-) sign to the right of the equal (=) sign means that
SetVisualStyle, if present, gets deleted.

SetVisualStyle stores configuration data for the policy setting: Load a
specific visual style file or force Windows Classic. Which you do not want!

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
"MinAnimate"="0"
0 disables animation and 1 enables it.
I'm not sure where that is, probably the first item @ System Properties |
Advanced | Performance Options | Visual Effects. Animate windows when
minimizing and maximizing. Some of the items available from the Effects
button are also listed here. I have all of that animation crap turned off.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance]
CustomColors
Stores information about the custom colors that the user creates.
To change the color scheme, double-click Display in Control Panel. Click the
Appearance tab, click the Color drop-down box, and then click Other. Select
a color, and then click Add to Custom Colors. In Appearance | Advanced and
other places where custom colors can be chosen.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer]
"NoChangeKeyboardNavigationIndicators"=dword:00000000
A value of 1 disables the "Hide keyboard navigation indicators until I use
the ALT key" option in the Display Control Panel. 0 is default.

Available from the Effects button, which doesn't work for you!!! Sensing a
trend here?

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Advanced]
"ListviewAlphaSelect"=dword:00000001 is Show translucent selection
rectangle
"ListviewShadow"=dword:00000001 is Use drop shadows for icon labels on the
desktop

@ System Properties | Advanced | Performance Options | Visual Effects.
Maybe the Effects button also, but I am getting tired.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

For a value of 0 Windows exits it saves the desktop layout, including icon
location, appearance and other parameters. A setting of 1 disables any
changes from being saved therefore allowing someone to preserve a configured
layout.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer]
"ClassicShell"=dword:00000000
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer]
"ClassicShell"=dword:00000000

A value of 1 disables the web content and tasks in Explorer, it will also
remove the Desktop item from Display Properties.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\
{41E300E0-78B6-11ce-849B-444553540000}\InProcServer32]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,2
5,\00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,74,00,68,0
0,\ 65,00,6d,00,65,00,75,00,69,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

{41E300E0-78B6-11ce-849B-444553540000} is the CLSID for PlusPack CPL
Extension

If you do not have a key or a value that usually is the same as a policy
that is not enabled. Sometimes adding a key or value with a disabled value
can fix things. <shrug>

If you do not like any of the settings change them later. You can change
the registry settings by making the changes in System Properties | Advanced
| Performance Options | Visual Effects. Or in Display Properties |
Appearance at anytime later.
