Windows XP Pro Desktop Display Properties not Working

G

Guest

QUESTION: When you right click on the desktop then click on Properties and
the Display Properties box comes up. All the tabs are working except for the
Desktop tab. When you click on the Desktop tab, you can change the color,
click on the Customize button, or the Browse button they work but not the
Background. The background graphics list is grayed out and the mouse can not
click on any of them or the down arrow. I ran some system checks but could
not find the problem. If you can help please either post and/or send me an
email. Greatly appreciate it. Gail

Note: I reasearch everwhere. Other tech friends I've contacted said the
same thing as I that it could be a trojan embedded somewhere and the virus
scanner can't find it, or a corrupted graphic file, or a corrupted system
files. I'm a teckie myselft but have never run into this problem myself.
This is a question for someone else I'm fixing.

Cannot change Desktop background wallpaper.

This can be caused by the following policy.

Prevent changing wallpaper policy: Prevents users from adding or changing
the background design of the desktop. By default, users can use the Desktop
tab of Display in Control Panel to add a background design (wallpaper) to
their desktop. If you enable this setting, the Desktop tab still appears,
but all options on the tab are disabled.

Weslay,
thanks for the info. I actually have the same problem. It seems to have
occurred over the past couple of days. (It's 12/26/2006 now.) I ran the
registry file and checked the keys with regedit. It looks like things
are ok. But I still can't modify the wallpaper when I am logged in as
administrator. I can when I am logged in as something else. I am
running Windows Media Center at the moment.
Any ideas on what I might do?
Much obliged for any assistance and have a good one.
Thanks,

Wesley,

I am having a similar problem. I just got a new computer at work and
the IT guys moved everything over from the old machine. A
"rundll.exe" error occurred this morning, and now when I go to Display
Properties and click on Desktop tab, it kicks me out back to the
desktop. This occurs when I use the Control Panel's Appearance and
Themes link also. I have admin privileges on this machine and even
the tech guy is stumped. Attempting to change the wallpaper also
kicks me out

Do you think the solution below will help?

Thanks.

rundll.exe or rundll32.exe?

rundll32.exe is Run a DLL as an App and is found on XP. rundll.exe does not
exist on XP, it is an old 16 bit program found on Windows 95, 98, etc.

rundll.exe if found on XP, is part of a trojan.

A rundll error usually mentions something about "Error loading XXX"

What was your Rundll error?

Sorry, I meant rundll32.exe.

I didn't bring home a copy of the screenshot I took, but I will
tomorrow. It appears to be crashing in the same spot each time. The
message comes up sporadically when I try to click on the Desktop tab
in Display properties. It simply closes the window and goes back to
the desktop. The other tabs are fine. I can continue working just
fine, but this is a brand new machine that had an image of my old
computer placed on it. To my knowledge, this problem did not occur on
the old computer.

I thought I had fixed it today. I did a system restore, and even
though it would not complete the restore (saying the computer wasn't
changed), when I would go to the Desktop tab it would work fine. But
if I logged off or restarted the computer, it would give me the same
problem. Very strange.

I clicked on the error report and it gave me the name of a DLL file
that might be the problem. It's also in the screenshot I took so I'll
give you more info tomorrow. My IT guys are stumped.

Display Properties is desk.cpl.

Opens Display Properties...
Start | Run | Type: desk.cpl | Click OK

desk.cpl could be messed up. Try running the System File Checker.

System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

sfc /scannow scans all protected system files immediately and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

System File Checker takes a while to run.

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897128

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be listed in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK | Click System |

Windows File Protection will be listed under the Source column. Look at any
Windows File Protection entries.

Explains a whole bunch about sfc.exe.

Hi, Wes.

Actually, my IT guy already did what you suggested below and it didn't
return anything funky.

Here is the error message that I was supposed to post yesterday. This
occasionally pops up after the Desktop tab kicks me out. Most of the
time it just goes back to the desktop without the error message.
Anyway, here it is:

The instruction at "0x7c901010" referenced memory at "0x00000014". The
memory could not be "read".

When I clicked the debug button on the error report, I got the
following:

Run a DLL as an App

Error Signature
AppName: rundll32.exe AppVer:5.1.2600.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00001010

Let me know if this gives you a clue to anything. On Monday we're
going to try reinstalling all the drivers to see if that helps.

Do you know what ntdll.dll does?

Thanks for your assistance with this.
