Hi Wes

Hope you don't mind me jumping in. . .

I read the thread you pointed to with great interest. Hmm. . . my clock
is normally updated by XP every day (once a day) and by my mail client
(Turnpike) every 8 hours BUT my Did you know? was stuck at June 30,
2005.

However, I use the University of Manchester (England) timeserver. I
noticed that poster Lizzie in the thread said nothing happened when she
used time.nist.gov. -- H&S only updated when she used time.windows.com.
So I'm wondering, could it be the act *not* just of synchronising the
clock, but of using the specific Windows timeserver that somehow makes
the difference?

Unfortunately I can't try it out because somehow I've managed to lose my
NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml and now just get the "When you are
connected to the Internet. . ." display :-( Would it be possible for
you to send me a copy of yours, as you offered another poster? I'd be
very grateful! My reply-to address works.

Many thanks for the detail Wes. I'm on Dial-up and have made the changes
described in the knowlege article. Unfortunately though I don't have the
file for XP Home -" NewsHeadlines_1033_Personal.xml " . Any ideas where I
can get it from please?

Help and Support Center Does Not Automatically Connect to the Internet

Also, if you do not have one of these files

Hi Ramesh,

Here's what I have.

Windows XP Professional SP1.

I have changed tense here and there, but I am not going to fix my grammar.

I opened Help and Support Center.
I clicked on Index.
I heard two Windows XP Ding.wav sounds, one right after the other.
I got an error message...
---------------------------
Help
---------------------------
Cannot locate "C:\\WINNT\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Indices\\merged.hhk".
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I clicked on OK, that error message closed and then I saw another error
message...
---------------------------
Help
---------------------------
Cannot locate "C:\\WINNT\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Indices\\merged.hhk".
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I clicked OK on that message to close it.

My merged.hhk is in
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Indices

There has never been a C:\WINNT folder on this machine. Windows has always
been in C:\WINDOWS.

After closing the two error messages, the left hand pane has...
A white Index link in a blue band and below it, it is just a blank white
space with no red X mark.

Right clicking the Index link brings up a context menu...

Forward (Grayed out/unavailable)
-----------------
Select all
-----------------
Print
Refresh (Grayed out/unavailable)
-----------------

Clicking the Index link flashes the info in the right hand pane.

Clicking Back on the context menu makes Forward Not grayed out/available
after clicking the Index link. Otherwise clicking Back returned me to the
Help and Support Center home page.

Clicking Forward on the context menu, when it is available, flashes the info
in the right hand pane.

Hi Ramesh,

Here it is again.

Here are some things for you to consider. I tried to pay careful
attention
to listing each thing that I did and the result.

I have Windows XP Professional SP1.

In my experiments, nothing looks 100% consistent. But synchronizing
the clock is definitely related. Synchronizing the clock before
opening H & S with NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml missing and
then opening H & S
creates a new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml. But not every time.

Seems like a lot of screwing around to get a feature that I don't even
use to update correctly.

It did not work for me (using broadband) with or without IE window open.
Same old 0 byte newsblock02[1].xml in TIF

To recap, the "open IE first trick" worked fine this past weekend.

I tried again today (monday) WITHOUT opening IE first, and it updated just
fine anyway; so, I can't tell if the trick was responsible or if it's just
a "good day".

I'd like to see it not work and then try the trick and get it to work to
be sure the trick is responsible. But, as when looking for the solution
to any problem, when you look carefully it won't happen! Thank you Mr.
Murphy!

It's too nice a day to worry about it, time to leave the hole and venture
down the road of life...

Hi Ramesh and anyone else that may be interested,

Here is some more grist for the Help and Support Did you know mill.

I just tried these. Several times, in fact.

I got this message in Help and Support, under Did you know...

[[When you are connected to the Internet, this area will display links to

I typed something in the Search box, clicked the arrow, waited for Search to
finish, clicked the Back button. And go this...

A new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file was created in...
%windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News

something was what I actually typed in the Search box. Typing asdf has the
same effect. What ever one types, this actually gets Help and Support
Search doing something, connecting to the Internet. I tried Searching for
asdf also and got the same results.

asdf was still in the Search box, so I clicked the arrow. When the Search

this...

Did you know? Updated: Monday, 17 October, 2005

A new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file was created in...
%windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News
-----

These experiments may not have strictly followed the scientific method, but
I'm not a scientist. And I am impatient.

If the NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file is missing, this seems to
cause the When you are connected to the Internet message to appear under Did
you know in Help and Support.

Clicking on most anything in Help and Support and then hitting the Back
button seems to cause a new newsver.xml to be created in
%windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News

Sometimes just opening Help and Support created a new newsver.xml file.

I could see no problems with Help and Support if the newsver.xml file was
missing. At some point, navigating around Help and Support caused the
newsver.xml file to be recreated if it was missing.

Getting connected to the Internet, either directly with Internet Explorer or
through Help and Support (either Searching or clicking a link that takes one
to the Internet) or with synchronizing the pc clock, both of which use
Internet Explorer, creates a new NewsHeadlines_1033_Professional.xml file
while Did you know is Updating...

I have to imagine what I saw on XP Pro would happen on XP Home.

I have no idea what else has to be working correctly for any of this to have
happened.

There are too many combinations of how you can get connected to the Internet
in Help and Support.

I seemed to have spent several hours screwing around with this. I am going
to go find some lunch.

Hi Ramesh and anyone else that may be interested,

Here is some more grist for the Help and Support Did you know mill.

I just tried these. Several times, in fact.

<snip>

hmmm..I tried all that you did. My system still won't show the new date
and information. Keep on getting the standard message, "Did you
know...when you are connected..." etc. New files are not created in the
%windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News folder.

Tried it with firewall off, just the router with NAT on. Maybe I have
some services off that need to be on? The search function works in Help
and Support, though. A mystery for this system, and not one I'm willing
to spend much time on.

Sorry to keep troubling you Wes but I have followed all these steps and still

Thanks for the added info on services. The H&S service is set to

I started windows time and that didn't help. I might sometime reinstall

Apparently the Protected Storage, Server, Terminal Services, Windows Time
and Workstation services have nothing to do with H & S Did you know
updating.

Protected Storage hmm, I had the wrong impression about this service.

I closed Outlook Express and set Protected Storage to disabled.

Opened OE and a Logon window popped up...

[[Please enter your user name and password for the following server.]]

I typed in my password, checked the Remember Password box and clicked OK.

A second [[Please enter your user name and password for the following
server.]] popped up

I typed in my password for my second E-mail account (after I found where I
had it written down), checked the Remember Password box and clicked OK.

Closed OE and reopened it. No Logon window popped up.

I rebooted. Opened OE and no Logon windows popped up.

I wonder why I thought I needed the Protected Storage service running?

I have Append Completion, AutoComplete and AutoSuggest turned off.

Apparently the Protected Storage, Server, Terminal Services, Windows Time

I stopped and disabled the Server service.

I set to Automatic and started the Server and the Workstation services.

Thanks for all the work. It seems there is no obvious reason here why
yours works and mine doesn't.
