I am at a total loss. Ever since Feb 1 05, when going to "Help and support
center", the headline titled "Did you know" never updates. It states that it
is "updating" then this appears. "When you are connected to the internet
this area will display links......." I am online at the time using a dialup
modem. I have visited Kelly's corner and followed The directions there for
uninstalling and reinstalling "help and support center" in XP by Rebecca
Chen....several times. I have deleted the following file as per
instructions, C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News\newsver.xml. I have
inserted Win XP cd and run a restore. I have gone to the INF folder and
right clicked and installed the pchealth.inf.I have run sfc. All of these
actions were to no avail. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. David

Hi David,

Go to Start/Run and type in:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
regsvr32 /u C:\Winnt\System32\hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 C:\Winnt\System32\hhctrl.ocx

Kelly....thanks for the reply. When I type"regsvr32 /u
C:\Winnt\System32\hhctrl.ocx" in the run box I get this:
"loadlibrary("C:\Winnt\System32\hhctrl.ocx") failed-The specified module
could not be found." Yet when I did a search for hhctrl.ocx I found it in
C:\windows\system3 and a couple of other places. Should I put it in
Winnt?....or change the run cmd?. I have not done the fourth cmd as of yet.

Kelly,
I changed the cmd from Winnt to Windows and it did its thing. I then ran the
fourth and last cmd. Opened the help and support center and the same thing
happened....no update under the"Did you know" area. I redeleted
"C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News\newsver.xml" and reopened
help.....still nothing. Any other suggestions? Thanks, David

can you do a KB search? type netbeui into the seach field and click the
green arrow - do you get any knowledgebase hits (bottom section)? If so
your help and support network connection is just fine. If not then you do
in fact have an issue. This is often caused by a download accelerator
being installed, GetRight being one; look here:

http://www.getright.com/xp_help.html

If it does work, and it's just your "Did You Know" not updating, well then
join the club! It happens to me, and lots of others too; it's been
compained about a lot here and elsewhere. It used to update virtually
everyday (tho the headlines were the same, but with today's date), but has
stopped updating since about Jan 05. Every once in a while it will
update.

My research has resulted in finding that the files it downloads,
newsblock01.xml and newsblock02.xml, are somehow being filtered, and are
ending up in the IE cache as empty files (zero length files, with no entry
in the index.dat file), and that causes H+S to not process them. I do not
know who or what is doing this filtering. If you simply put their URL into
IE and fetch them they display just fine. It's wierd. Zone Alarm has
been implicated, but not proven guilty!

Frodo.....did as you suggested....got immediate results back from mskb (11
as a matter of fact). Also got 2 suggested topics and 1 full-text search
match. Guess I will have to live with "did you know" not updating. Thanks
for your response. David
