Did You Know in XP Help/Support Center

Despite kind suggestions from experts, Did You Know wont open.

I run XP Home SP2, XP Firewall,AVG Free and MS Anti Spy.

PC recreates Newsver.XML in %windir%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Config\News but never
any sign of NewsHeadlines_1033_Personal.xml which I'm told is the key to
opening Did You Know. (The Did You Know box tells me to connect to the
internet which I already am).

Not major problem I know, but it's driving me mad. I'm sure one of you
experts out there must have cracked this one previously?

No, it's still flakey, some days it updates, others it won't.

Mine hasn't updated for months.

known issue, no definative solution. not a big deal, you're not missing
anything.

doing this MAY make it work:

1) open clock and update the internet time
2) open internet explorer; you don't need to "go" anywhere, blank is ok

now click on desktop, press F1 to bring up Help and Support.

"Did You Know..." _MAY_ now update correctly. and it may not! these 2
very unscientific prepatory actions seem to make it work more smoothly
tho.

Got it working by doing the following:

Open Control Panel - > Internet Options - > Advanced TAB - > HTTP 1.1
settings. Unselect Use HTTP 1.1 and Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connections. Select OK. Open Help and Support and Did You Know? will now
update.

Discovered this, by chance, when I was trying to get squidNT (Proxy server)
to work. Noted when I configured browser clients to point to proxy server,
Help and Support "Did you know?" started working. Found in internet
options (on client machines) HTTP/1.1 Protocol was turned off for Proxy
connections (By default in WINXP SP2 GDR version). Also noted in WINXP SP2
OEM versions that HTTP/1.1 Protocol is off by default (On by default in GDR
versions), so there is no consistency here.

The only main issue, that I can find anyway, is that HTTP/1.0 Protocol opens
seperate TCP connections.

I suspect it was pure coincidence, but thanks for pointing this out. MS
certainly should be working fine w/ HTTP 1.1, the standard is several
years old now.

FWIW, my DYKnow has been updating a tad better than in the past, but it's
still hit and miss. I just hit F1 (sunday nite 11pm GMT) and it worked
fine, yesterday it didn't. I _AM_ still setup to use HTTP 1.1.

I had to disable 1.1. I had both 1.1 and 1.1 via proxy ticked. Clearing 1.1 made it work. It worked for Ramesh too.

Oops, I'm bad. I mean't to say HTTP/1.1 Protocol is unselected (NOT OFF).
When unselected both HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1 will now work. Sorry for the
confusion. :)

Hopeful but...alas, no combination of those settings affected this
system. Still won't update.

SYMPTOMS
When you try to use a Windows XP Internet-based program, such as Microsoft Windows Media Player or Help and Support Center, and you are using a broadband connection that has an established connection either to a broadband provider or to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that uses proxy services, the Windows XP program may not detect the active connection.

You may receive either an error message that says "The destination is unreachable" or a prompt that asks you to create or configure the Internet connection.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you use the New Connection Wizard to create the broadband connection. The New Connection Wizard does not by default enable proxy automatic detection for broadband connections that require authentication.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, edit the connection settings for the broadband connection to enable automatic detection: 1.Start Internet Explorer.
2.Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
3.Click the Connections tab.
4.Under Dial-up and VPN Settings, click the broadband connection, click Settings, and then click Automatically detect settings.
5.Click OK.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Hello Simon:
Good info. My DYK hadn't worked since I don't remember when..... But I
deleted the "NewsSet.xml" file and, lo and behold, it actually updated to
Dec. 5, 2005.

Still no go. I'm not loosing any sleep over it though. Thanks for the
suggestions.
