Help & Support Center doesn't update

Hi all,

I've been searching and reading other posts from other users who are also
complaining about the Help & Support Center on their Windows XP installation
not updating. I have Windows XP Pro, Svc. Pk. 2 kept updated with the
Microsoft updates just like the ones released today. Also as I've been
reading I've successfully updated my computer time and date with the
time.windows.com server 4 times during the last hour. I still cannot get the
Help & Support Center to update. I'm getting the same message everybody else
gets about connecting to the Internet, I connect to the Internet via
broadband cable from Time Warner RoadRunner in Columbus, Ohio where I live.
I've followed every thread and read all of the information, but it's just not
working for me.

I give personalized software lessons to clients on their own computers in
private homes, and I believe I'm reasonably knowledgable about computers and
software. However this issue with the Help & Support Center not updating
really has me stumped. I'd really appreciate help from somebody.

Also before somebody asks, I have McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 and
the Firewall is not blocking anything that I can see. If it lets my pc
update with the time.windows.com server then it should also be letting the
Help & Support Center update, but it's just not happening.

Thanks, Mike

Don't worry about it!

It's been spotty for a long time, and there isn't anything in the "Did You
Know..." that you don't already know. It's just a bug which MS is
apparently unable to fix...add it to the list.

To validate that H&S _DOES_ in fact connect to the net, do a search for
"NetBeui"; there should be several Knowledgebase hits (third catagory
down; I get 13 hits here when Search Options is set to search "Windows
XP"). If you don't get any KB hits then it really isn't connecting, and
you do have a real problem. Otherwise you're in the same boat as the
other survivors, count your blessings...

Frodo,

Thanks for your reply. I did the search for NetBeui in the Help & Support
Center and got 15 hits returned in the Microsoft Knowledge Base category. I
assume that means that I am connecting to the Internet and that Help &
Support Center is querying the correct place.

It sure is strange though because previously it did work and updated
whenever I opened H&S Center. Problem is that I don't know when it quit or
why.

As you said, I'll count my blessings that it's at least working.

Thanks, Mike

If this occurred after the installation of McAfee it's safe to assume
that McAfee is blocking the scripting that is required to connect to
Windows/Microsoft Update. Since I'm unfamiliar with McAfee other then
how to uninstall it, perhaps another poster will either provide a clue
on changing script blocking settings or point you to McAfee's forums.

MowGreen,

It started before the installation of McAfee Internet Security 2006 but like
Frodo suggested in his reply, the Help & Support Center is connecting and
getting answers from the Microsoft web site. Thanks for taking time to
reply, Mike
