I have 2 Xp computers and one Win98Se computer connected to a router.
All have file sharing enabled.

The XPs can open the Win98 folders . But when the Win98 machine tries
to open the XP folders, it asks for a network passoword at resource "
//name//IPC$".

I have not set the XP to ask for any password. What should I do?

You shoould have identical user accounts on the XP computers and the 98
computer. If you are logging in to Win98 with user name abc and password
nospam, then you need to have an account on the XP computer with user name
abc and password nospam.

the Win98se uses only Windows Logon. So It should not be the reason.

I just connected a 3rd XP to the router. This one does not asked for a
Password for access. The only possible difference is that the 3rd XP
requires a boot logon account and pwd.( the other 2 boots straight
thru). But I cannot see how this can account for the difference

If 98 is using Windows Logon, then this is the reason that 98 cannot connect
to XP. Go into Network Neighborhood properties and change the Primary logon
to "Microsoft Networking." Reboot, then logon to "Microsoft Networking" with
the same username and password you use on the XP box.

If you really want to fix this thing then go into the xp computer and look
at the shares you have set up on it. The shares are probably password
protected. Right click on any folder you are sharing and set it to not
require a password. You should be logged on as administrator and or set
yourself up as administrator while you are in there. I just set mine to
share the c drive and when the warning comes up, I tell it to shut up and I
know how to operate my machine and will take the responsibility.

I share files with my xp and 98se every day back and forth with no problem.

Set the 98se machine for windows logon and not network logon and enjoy.

But what about the 3rd XP I mentioned in my earlier posting. Win 98(
Windows Logon) can see it .What is the reason?
