Word 2003 files slow to close

Hi everyone --

Within the last few days my Mcirosoft Word 2003 files have become very slow
to close. When I have a file -- regardless of how big -- open and go to close
it, there is a long delay and often the text disappears and then I have to
close another Word window.

Also I am frequently having files that won't close at all -- no response.
The words jumble and the window picks up pieces from my desktop, rearranging,
swirling text.

Any ideas as to why my Word 2003 is doing this?

Thanks for any feedback.

Thank you so much Graham. I followed through with your advice -- deleting
temp. files and resetting certain settings in Word and on my computer.
Unfortunately the problem persists.

I don't know how to update the display driver or what that means. If anyone
has a quick link or descrip. as to how to do that I'd be very grateful.

Presently I can't close my Word files 80% of the time. I open them and then
shutdown my computer to close them periodically. Any help is greatly
appreciated. My Word 2003 works just fine until I want to close a file.

Thanks everyone.

The display driver is the software that allows Windows to write to the
screen, working in conjunction with whatever display adapter you have. You
can check that from Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
Identify the display adapter and see what the manufacturer has available in
the way of updates.

Your original description of the problem still bears hallmarks of virus
activity or a hardware problem and nothing to do with Word.

Does Word work correctly if you start it in its safe mode ie Hold CTRL
whilst starting and acknowledge the prompt. If that fixes it, then the
problem is more likely corruption of the normal.dot template or an
inappropriate or corrupt add-in.

Every time Word crashes or you crash out of it you will leave temporary
files that will make things worse.

Do you have voice recognition software active? Turn of the microphone.

Thank you again Graham. I never was prompted that you responded. I really
appreciate it. I'll look into all that you advise and hopefully that will
solve the problem.

I can't find the normal.dot for my Word 2003 in order to rename it. Do you
know where I can find the normal.dot to change it. I'm sorry if these are
idiotic questions. I really appreciate all the help.

Thanks --
