word 2003 slow to open files

Hi all

We have 4 machines using Microsoft Word 2003 (Microsoft Office 2003).

Some not all files seem delay at opening by 10-30 seconds other will open
fine before 2 seconds. Word seems fine as when you open within word its
stilled delayed.

I have disabled anti virus / firewall software. No luck

We did change a computer name.

I thing I did notice was if I disable the local area connection, they all
open quick, enable it and slow again.

Word is looking for data on the missing computer name hence the delay. Those
files that open slowly, when they do open re-attach the template from the
new location.

Tools > templates and add-ins > attach template. Select the template from
its new location.

You need to change the old and new server paths at

OldServer = "<\\rsnj01\vol1>"
NewServer = "<\\rsnyc1p\vol3>"

thanks graham

so how does it know what folder to action?

also if i have folders within folders, will it work on all documents within
the subfolders?

When you run the macro, it prompts for the folder. It does not work on sub
folders.

Hello Graham,

We have loaded a new PC with My Document files from the previous one, on
which Word 2003 (XP) was running very slowly. Word is again running slowly
on the new PC, and occasionally hanging. Any ideas please?

Simon

It is better to start an new thread than hijack an old one. The old thread
concerned delays caused by a change of server where the document templates
were stored. Is that your problem? If not, what else did you transfer from
old to new?

See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm.

My guess is over enthusiastic virus checking - Checking of Word/Office
documents can usually be deselected in the AV program e.g. in Norton AV by
turning off its Office Plug-in.

With some versions of the Norton product it may be necessary to unregister
the calling DLL by running the following command line from Windows > Start >
Run

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

Other AV apps eg the popular free edition of Grisoft's AVG antivirus
software, require similar treatment.
In this instance:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgoff2k.dll"

OK sorry didn't realise the etiquette.
All My Documents were transferred. I will try your suggestions.
Thanks!
