Windows will not pull an IP address from cable modem

I am running Windows XP SP2 and I recently attempted to upgrade from Verizon
DSL to Comcast cable modem service. No matter what the installer did, he
could not get the computer to pull an IP address from the cable modem. The
computer pulled the IP address from the DSL modem with no problems at all. I
recall that I had a similar problem when I tried to install a Linksys
firewall/router last year. Does anyone know whether there is a conflict with
either Windows or perhaps the Verizon software that prohibits the IP
addresses of other devices from being acquired?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Is it possible that your provider is only allowing certain mac addresses?
Over here in the UK, our cable providers used to only allow a pre-defined
MAC address to get IP addresses from DHCP servers. Most cable routers allow
you to present a false MAC address on the WAN port.

Just a stab in the dark

When the Comcast tech installed your broadband connection was he able to
connect using his laptop?
If he could then you can eliminate the modem as the problem.
If he couldn't, then the problem is in the line or the modem.
If the line and modem were shown to be good (he could make a connection
using his equipment). the problem is in your PC configuration. I'm not
familiar with the verizon setup software that you used for your previous DSL
connection, but if its anything like AOL there is a likelihood that changes
were made to your browser that might be blocking the connection. Can you
remove the Verizon setup using Add-Remove programs? If you can do it. Then
setup a new connection in IE.
Open IE > Click Tools > Click Internet Options > Click Connections > Click
SetUp. Follow the instructions to set up a new connection to the internet.

First in IE under tools/options/connections this should be set for
automatic and everything else unchecked on this page. The modem should
already be setup properly do not touch it. In the Linksys router under
Setup set it to" Optain IP automatically" and place the Domain name in
the blank. To obatina the domain name plug the router directly into
your computer and do a ipconfig /all. after you have done these steps
hit "Apply". After the modem is now hooked up to your router and your
PCs up to your router go to each PC and open a cmd window. Do a
ipconfig /release then a ipconfig /renew. After this you will see your
new ip and now you can surf the net. If you have a email I can take
snap shots of my setup and email them to you. I hope this helps. Reply
to this with an email address and I will respond....
