No IP address; can't connect to internet

Computer will not connect to the internet; Verizon DSL is my ISP; computer
says the ip address needs fixed; gives ip address as 0.0.0.0

Tried ip config and ip renew. Tried rolling back the computer to a previous
system restore settings save point. Tried reinstalling Verizon ISP software.
I have another Dell, a 4400, connected using the same Verizon DSL and same
account and same modem. All wires and the modem are ok. There is no problem
with the ISP or ISP account. The ip address needs fixed. I have been on the
phone with Verizon, who said it was a problem with the computer. I was on the
phone with Dell hardware support who said it was a software issue. I
previously had this computer connected to a different Verizon DSL account at
a different location and it worked fine.

Thank you.

What's the internal IP address of your DSL router?

You don't mention it , but are your machines hooked up to a router,
DSL modems do not hand out IP's.

Both of my computers are hooked up to a DSL modem, a Westell Versalink 327W.
One connects fine, the other one does not, and gives it's IP as 0.0.0.0. When
I try to connect that computer, it says it can't connect because there is no
IP, but when I hit the button to repair the problem it says it can't and to
see whoever is in charge of my network, which I guess is just me as these are
just home computers.

What should I do?

Thank you.

is your DSL modem designed to share a connection with more than one
machine? Modems in general do NOT share a connection - you need a router
to do that.

My understanding is that Verizon only allows one IP address at a time.
You should be using a NAT router (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc.) but
you need to check with your ISP to make sure what will work with their
modem.

My modem has 4 connections for 4 computers to be hooked up to it at the same
time (maybe it is a router as well? it is a Westell Versalink 327W). It also
has wireless and the laptops run through it while the other computer is on
just fine.

Here is a link to the Users Manual for your Westell Verselink 327W.
http://westell.com/content/sales/327W.pdf
This modem is also a 4 port wired router & a wireless router.

I think we need to look at the configuration of the modem.
Open your web browser and go to http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1
This will get you connected to the modem to check it's configuration.

Looking through the manual I found that it could be set for "Single Static
IP". If this is Enabled that would explain why one computer works and one
doesn't. You will have to disable "Single Static IP" for the router to
work with multiple computers.

Go to Configuration > Advanced LAN > DHCP
DHCP Server should be at Private LAN
DHCP Start Address = 192.168.1.15 (the factory default)
DHCP End Address = 192.168.1.47 (the factory default)

Go to Configuration > Advanced LAN > DNS
Check that it is configured to get the DNS information from DHCP.

This should either get you going or give us more information so we can help
you.

Have you tried disconnecting the Dell that works, then connecting the
other computer to that same port? If so, what happens then?

I tried disconnecting the working comp and trying to connect with the other
one, but no luck. I get an error 769 message that says Verizon DSL can't be
reached.

Am I supposed to access the Westell modem info from the comp that works or
the one that doesn't? I can access it from the one that does connect and
static ip is not on and the other stuff looks ok as far as I can tell, but I
cannot access it from the comp that won't connect.

Thank you,

By the way you worded that, I think you might have something plugged in the
wrong place. Let's double check.

Plug in the incoming line (the DSL wire) into DSL plug on the Westell
modem.
These next 2 steps aren't completely neccessary but it let's us know
exactly what we are "looking" at.
Plug Computer-1 (the computer that connects properly) into E1 on the
Westell Modem.
Plug Computer-2 (the problem child) into E2 on the Westell Modem.
Check to see that there are lights on at the back of your computers where
the network cable gets plugged in. There are normally 2 lights. One tells
us there is a connection, and the other one blinks a lot and tells us there
is actually communication happening between the modem and the network card.

What I expect to see at this point is Computer-1 connecting again and
Computer-2 not working.

Boot Computer-2, get into Network properties > Local Area Connection
properties > Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) properties.
Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked.
Make sure "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is checked.
Reboot Computer-2
Check the Internet connection.
If this doesn't work write back and tell us to keep thinking. :)
