WINDOWS DEFENDER UPDATE Error 0X80070422

A

Achyut

1. When I try to update windows defender, I get error 0x80070422.

2. By the way, my windows update has also stopped working (it tells me to
run service.msc but that hasn't worked).

3. Just to give you a background, around the same time the above started
happening, something called "antivirus 2009" kept popping up on my IE. I
didn't open it but cancelled it. It still doesn't go away.

4. Consequent to (3) above, I ran an anti virus scan with my "freedom"
antivrus. It found a virus called,"S/FakeAV.A" .

The virus was deleted...I still can't make my windows updates work (either
manual or auto)

FYI:
The MRT is an "On Demand" anti malware scanner and has *limited* malware
target list; It is effective within its limitations. A new version is
generated once per month and it is not a Windows Defender component.

You can download it manually from Microsoft or is can be obtained and
executed automatically on each month's Patch Tuesday.

The file is;
%windir%\system32\MRT.exe

You can see the switch parameters with...
%windir%\system32\MRT.exe /?

The log file is...
%windir%\Debug\mrt.log

Running the following command line with launch a full scan and clean
malware automatically without user intervention.
%windir%\system32\MRT.exe /f:y

I had the same problem.
Here is my info...
Windows XP Pro SP2
Dell System
I was trying to update Windows Defender since it has been flagging me that
it needs attention to be updated.

I had previously had turned off (and will keep it off, it is my preference)
Windows Updates.
1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. Security Center
4. Automatic Updates
5. Turn Off Automatic Updates.

This prevents all Windows Microsoft Updates Off (Obviously!!!!) including
Windows Defender.
Once I restart the Automatic Updates (Turn on Automatic Updates), proceed to
update Windows Defender and click on updates. VIOLA!!!
The Windows Defender Starts Updating without any problems.

Hope this helps.

I READ THROUGH ALL OF THIS AND TRYED ALL OF THOSE THINGS, BUT IT STILL
DOESNT SAVE MY SETTINGS TO KEEP THE UPDATER ON.. IT KEEPS ON TURNING
OFF........

I NEED MORE DIRECTIONS THAT ARE DUMMY PROOF.. :)

Even though it may take more typing, it is better to start a new
thread--post a new message, for your problem, then to tack it on to another
thread like this one--it may easily be missed.

We need a bit more information. What version of Windows do you have--XP or
Vista or Windows 7?

Do you have Windows Live OneCare installed?

What antivirus application is installed?
