Error Message 80072EFD

I try to update windows defender but it fails, giving me error code 80072EFD.
One website said this error message means you cant connect to the internet,
but I have no problems accessing the internet.

When windows update tries to update defender it gets to 1% then fails. When
I run a Norton virus scan it finds tracking cookies, but cant find any
viruses, but I think there is a virus somewhere. Does anyone know how I can
fix this and remove the virus? Also whenever I try to manual download any
defender update from the Microsoft website it won't connect to the website.

1) Please give us the OS version information by going to:

Start > Run... enter: "winver" without the quotes and click on OK.

Transcribe the exact version information into a reply to this thread.

2) Besides Windows Defender, what other antimalware is running on your system?

3) What is the complete name & exact version information for your Norton
application.

4) When did this trouble first appear relative to other
updates/upgrades/installations?

Thank you.

1. Vista Ultimate Version 6.9 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) Also it took a
while, but I was finally able to get service pack 2 installed 2 days ago.

2. I installed Norton 2010 Antivirus a few days ago, but after this problem
started. I also have malwarebytes, but it is currently blocked by windows
and I am waiting to allow it to run. When I first installed malwarbytes it
found an error in the registry, and I am computer savy enough to know not to
mess with the registry, but no other program has seen this regitry problem.

3.The exact name is Norton Antivirus 2010 with Antispyware.

4. My last automatic update was on 3/11/10. Shortly after I noticed that
my updates were failing and there were other odd problems so I stopped using
the machine until I installed Norton, and now I am attempting to fix it. I
am still unable to access any fix from the microsoft website. After a few
attempts I was able to download service pack 2 a couple days ago, but that
has been the only update that has downloaded (no seperate updates for
defender).

Someone else was using my machine and said that some wierd website came up a
couple weeks ago, and that is why I thought there might be malware of some
kind, but I was not there to see what happened.

I am able to view the website to manually download the windows defender
update (https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx), but
when I try to manually download the link in the first link my web browser
says it cannot connect to the server. I just noticed that my ISP put an
application Comcast Desktop Doctor on my computer. I haven't seen this
before, so I am not sure if it has any affect, but I believe the proplem
started before this new icon was in my toolbox.

I also added mircosoft, and microsoft.updates to my trusted sites and it
still didnt let me connect. And I was able to download Service Pack 2,
downloading is only a problem when I goto update Defender.

For the second link it refers to firewalls, resource issues, internet
problems, and database errors, but I only have problems accessing the windows
defender update website. I am not aware of any firewalls other than the
windows firewall, but I can't image the windows firewall preventing me from
accessing the windows website. I have a fairly new computer which I
installed new memory about a year ago and have had no problems, so I don't
see resources as a problem. I have had no internet difficulties, only when I
try to access the windows defender website. And I am not sure how to check
for database errors.

Earlier, you mentioned you had "malwarebytes" and I must assume you mean
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). If so, and if your version is v1.46, make
sure your copy is updated to Database version: 4091 or better. Do a quick
scan, regardless of whether you have the free or full version.

Please advise if have have recent full backups of your system.

Please update this thread with your results and progress.

Malwarebytes found 2 objects,

They are both called Trogan.DNSChanger and are in the Registry Data
Category, do you need the path?

I might have a full backup, I would have to check. I am able to use the
computer, but I am more worried about why defender wont update and what is
installed on the computer.

You probably meant to say "Trojan.DNSChanger". Cut and paste the path so
that others may benefit from your experience.

This Trojan malware may have targeted the WD update URL as part of its
damage to your system.

You did not make it clear if you allowed MBAM to remove the malware. You
should. Rerun MBAM with the latest database version to confirm the Trojan's
removal.

Please review and follow these instructions if you have not already:

Quite separate from your Comcast cable modem, do you have a router?

Please update this thread with your progress.

I will not be available for further replies till sometime Thursday.

The path for the two tojan files are:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControl\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DhcpNameServer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControl\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{ee78ffff-48064bb0-92b0-49eee6e1bf0e}\DhcpNameServer

And I do have a wireless router I use. My modem is a motorola, comcast ISP,
and Linksys wireless router. If I remember correctly I removed these same
two trojans previously (they are in the registry which I will let
Malwarebytes remove but I wont play with). And this was not fixed, but I was
using the old database.

I kinda figured the malware was preventing me from accessing the update
site, but I was checking here to see if anyone had this problem or knew a wok
around so I could update Defender.
