win defender was unable to complete the update 0x80070422

Hi,
I've just download & installed win defender in the first time (was using MS
AntiSpyware before without any problems) and met a problem after installation.

When I'm trying to do on-line update, the following error message perists:

Wind defender was unable to complete the update 0x80070422. The service
cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled
devices assosiated with it.

There are no services in my Win 2000 Prof, which relates to win defender.
I'm running Norton Internet security 2006 as firewall - but it is not an
issue (I was trying to switch it off without any luck).

Search in knowledge base returned nothing.

Hello Serg,

I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are started:

1.Automatic Updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.

Hope this post was useful - unlike the last :)

Hi, Engel

Guys, you are great, thank you very much for your help!

I've checked my services and enabled two of them, which was not enabled to
run (auto-updates and BITS). As I'm on Win 2000, I haven't cryptographic and
sys restore services - but this doesn't matter here.

After doing that I've successfully run and installed updates for Wind
defender (even without re-starting the PC).
