It was not traits that I was comparing or commenting about. The simple
fact is that there are both mindless supporters and mindless detractors
to be seen here. I really wasn't concerned as to what traits they
exhibit. To me, there is not much difference between the detractor that
says "use linux, it will solve all your problems with vista" vs the
supporter that says "I use vista and I have never had any issues so it
must be something you did" when answering/commenting on problems being
reported. Mindless is mindless regardless of which side one is on. ymmv

I have a licensed OEM copy of Windows XP. I followed the directions in
the February issue of PCLINUXOS magazine for installing VMWARE. You
should first download and install PERL using synaptic (or other package
manage), and then follow the directions in the magazine. Once I had
VMWARE installed, I created a new virtual machine and gave 12 gigs to
windows. I selected one of my cdroms as a windows cdrom (it still works
in linux at the same time). Then I put in my xp disk and started the
virtual machine. It installed normally. All the drivers are built into
the Virtual Machine, so I did not have to load any drivers, but I did
have to restart Windows XP, so that it would find all of them. I also
have Fat32 partition, where I can transfer back and forth from Windows XP
to Linux. I did discover that you should use the common drive as read
only for linux and read/write for Windows, since Windows is too stupid to
register the changes that are made by linux. I leave Windows up all the
time on a separate desktop. I just finished my taxes on it. I guess if
you buy the $99 VMWARE you can cut and paste back and forth between
Windows and Linux, but for now the Fat32 partition serves my purposes. I
will however, eventually make the purchase, since I would like to support
VMWARE. I suppose that you can also run Linux under Windows, but why
would you want to slow down your computer...lol....? I really love this
solution. However, it is not suitable for high-intensive games, they
should be run in a dual boot arrangement.

I am a 60 year old divorced male with my own very small home computer
business. I live in a very old motor home on property which I rent.
There is a small air conditioned shop included in the rent. This is my
third year in business. I plan on continuing the business, even after I
start receiving my small social security check in three years. Since the
release of Vista, my loyal customers (I have a good rep), are showing
greater interest in alternative operating systems. I installed Linux on
three computers just over the past week, instead of reinstalling 98 or
other obsolete MS operating systems. I am not female, at least I don't
think so. I will accept dates from cute, young chicks who like
computers. A love for Linux is a plus.

Very interesting. Thanks for your detailed response. As a computer nut, I
like to try EVERYTHING. ;>)

You confuse your "I don't give a damn, it works for me" attitude which
you've proudly displayed here many times. I don't need to put words in
anybody's mouth, I make smartass dopes regret the dumb things they've
said.

Please show where I have ever made that statement or anything like it.
You are now a desperate liar.

You're just one of the clueless flock that endlessly whines about
people reporting real issues, you always reponding with the same
useless rants like you shouldn't have upgraded, oh you must not have
done any research or oh, if you don't like it, go back to XP, nobody
forced you to buy Vista or any of the other usual taunts throw around
by you and others with a similar mindset. Sorry, if my reminding you
that's what you do here got your shorts all bunched up.

um, yeah, sure, if that fiction comforts you.
Find a mirror, stare into you until you realize who's doing the
whining.

I realize it's you. I see the desperation in your posts. You've been
caught with your pants down.

You're just another hot headed ignorant wannabe that think you have a
right to scream and yell at anybody posting about real issues. I'm so
sorry I so easily upset you when reminding you of all the flaws
Windows has and had over the years. Its called REALITY. You apparently
prefer living in some fantasy world.

Here's a tip for you. How is it that you get so upset over what I'm
saying, and you can't deny you do, then why don't you show you have a
shread of brains and just skip over my posts. Can you do that?

Apparently not, you rather rant and scream.

Please point to any messages of mine where I rant and scream. I'm
certainly not upset. I'm just amused by you. Your input in this
thread has been meaningless as anything other then a demonstration of
how your mind works.

Norm,

I agree... and mainly because the members of both groups share this:
rudeness. I'm here to try and help folks, period. I have no political
agenda. I run XP, Vista, Ubuntu, SUSE, and Solaris here. (The Linux/Unix
stuff mostly out of curiosity; I'm surely no expert when it comes to
Linux/Unix.) My own personal opinion is that the detractors seem to be more
rabid than the supporters, just jumping into threads to spread their own
special flavor of FUD. As I've said in other posts; if one visits the Apple
Forums on their website, I doubt anyone would ever buy a Mac. But I've never
seen raving lunatics flaming Apple or Macs there anything like the Vista
detractors here flame away at MS, Vista, and anyone that happens to disagree
with them. And, yes, the supporter group can flame away too, they just don't
seem to be as dedicated as the detractors. I just try to stay out of their
little name calling tirades. As you said, ymmv.

Not Me

I haven't said it doesn't work, I just expressed MY opinion about the
interface and the lack of truely new features.
The majority of it seems to be eye candy.
Every time I run it I think...I waited 5 years for THIS????!!???
I have found that I can make just about any OS work as intended.
I'm still trying to figure out the intent of Vista.
It's certainly been a disappointment to me throughout Beta and into release.
I never had any real issues with security in XP.
For MS to say this is going to be a release all about security makes me
think they are going after the old AOL type customer.
Novices and casual users may need more security.
I've been at it a long time & never needed all that stuff to babysit me.
If I am going to be running an OS I really don't like, I am going to devote
a little more time to learning alternate OSes.
I have to support our network, and a lot of it will 'probably' be on Vista
in 18-24 months when we do our hardware upgrades.
I did convince the owners to wait an extra year to upgrade their hardware. I
think they were shocked at my recommendation, but they didn't argue about
it. But if MS doesn't address some of my issues in their service packs, they
may be in for a bigger surprise than they think.
I have already migrated a few older machines to Linux. It is improving, and
it runs on cheaper hardware. And I'm learning...
250 machines may be a drop in the bucket to MS, but many in the IT community
seem to share my dislike for this new 'thing' MS has thrown at us.
Just like GM used to be the worlds 'far & away' leader in auto sales, they
lost their way & are now in trouble.
I see a lot of that same type of arrogance from MS. Time will tell.
Much of the stuff we use has been migrated to the net anyway, so the front
end platform isn't nearly as important as it used to be.
With the improvements in third party browsers, and even an IE emulator
available for FF, Windows/IE may not be necessary for access to even the
most proprietary sites like it is is today.
Not liking something doesn't necessarily make one stupid or a spreader of
FUD.
If I was really that way, I wouldn't be expressing my displeasure in a forum
that MS at least gets some feedback from.
I would just go to a different platform & wave good-bye.
I know this is not an official MS group, but I do know there are some MS
employees that hang out here reading.

If I wanted to get into name calling, I'm sure could find a teen chatroom
somewhere...LOL

Opinion:
Enforcing DRM will probably be a downfall to MS. As a minimum, there will
be a lot of backpedaling by MS as other vendors continue to refuse to
adapt. The general public simply will not buy it. MS has taken the road to
flex their muscle in numbers. By making all other versions of Windows
obsolete, you must eventually use their newest product or switch. The
numbers that switch remain extremely small despite the verbal abuse in
this newsgroup. So, in the end, MS has set the groundwork whether you
agree or not.

Remember when Pentium processors first arose? All the squabble over a
processor that retains tracking/marketing information about the user on
the chip. Who's complaining about it now?

Regarding hardware problems, the major issue has been developing over the
years. MS releases criteria for vendors to meet when writing hardware
drivers, but the vendors (not all) take shortcuts. They write code that
overwrites protected areas of the system and registry taking advantage of
what is already there. The problem is that malware does the same thing. In
an effort to finally put a bigger lid on the problem, MS has enforced the
rules and now the drivers won't install correctly, or cannot find the APIs
they used. Vendors claim this is an attempt by MS to have them pay to
write MS compliant software. MS claims it is a means of stabilizing the OS
by preventing vendors/malware from overwriting critical areas. We are in
the middle.

I like your synopsis of the hardware problem Mark. May I use it in answer to
others who ask a similar question as to why their hardware/drivers have
problems - giving credit to you of course?
