warning: hidden internet temp files!!

Much to my horror while doing a Norton system scan, I noticed a huge number
of files in the folder: \WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.
When I used Windows Explorer to check it out, I noticed several hundred
files. mostly cookies. I delete them. No problem, right? Then, I notice
that there are 83,000 files, amounting to more than a gigabyte in that
folder!! How can that be? I can't see them. I have my folder view set to
see hidden files, but nothing doing. What's going on?

I do another Norton system scan, which fortunately reveals all the folder
names as it scans. I discover that there is a folder called Content.IE5
that contains about 20 folders with random character strings as names.
These folders are loaded with files! The only way to delete the files
inside these folders is to use the C prompt command line.

Why don't my cleanup utilities get these internet files?? Why does this
folder exist in the first place? I have IE 6. So, why is it Content.IE5? I
thought that the temp files were kept in \WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files.
Why is there another place for temporary files hidden in "Local Settings".
And why are they hidden and why can't you delete them by ordinary means?

you went to internet options> delete files > delete all offline content?
usually that deletes everything (cept cookies)

also check the size of your internet cache, if you keep it lower, it
wont amass such a large amount of files. internet options > temporary
internet files > settings, change it to 50 mb or so (mine was at 1gig
and i had no idea) but i dont use ie so its not full at all... try the
view objects button and see if you can see more of the files.

Run Internet Explorer.
Tools>Internet Options
General Tab
From here you control - Home Page
Temporary Internet Files
History
Under "Temporary Internet Files", click "Settings"
Decide on size etc. and YOU are in control!
