hidden files and directories... content.ie5

This is to supplement yesterdays topic of the same name.

It is important that you know that content.ie5 can often be found in two
places per user. (except that you can't easily find this one.)

This is about the really well hidden one
under ...\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

Excerpt from this
reference: http://www.geocities.com/aurfokz/forum/IE5.html

Where is this hidden content.ie5 folder located?
This hidden folder is a child to the visible Temporary Internet Files
folder.
In Windows XP Home, you can navigate to it with windows explorer:

C:\Documents and Settings\Local Username.CODE-Numbers.000\Local
settings\Temporary Internet Files

When you arrive at this Temporary Internet Files folder, you will not be
able to see the hidden cache folder CONTENT.IE5. You will only find the
cache of internet files (shortcuts that look like files). The
CONTENT.IE5 subdirectory will not be visible. You can find the hidden
cache by using this page, and you will see that if you navigate upward,
the hidden cache is a child to the Temporary Internet Files folder.

If you login as another user then providing you have permission to enter the
users are you will see the IE5 Window & the subfolders of it. I have never
been able to see anything more than the Temp Internet Files folder unless I
write a program to open/empty them

If you know a way to view the History.IE5 & all its sub folders for yourself
then I'll be interested

If you look at that Geocities page you'll see the username with the .000 on
the end. Seems like they re-installed windows over itselt which would
explain that

I hope this helps slightly,

I have found that if you mark "Local Settings" as Shared and mark it
"Allow Network Users to Change my Files", then you can see see them
through Network Neighborhood or My Network Places,

You can also delete files / folders that are "not in use"

I originally found this situation because the Virus Scanner found a
trojan hiding in there. Besides that, attempts to delete it failed
because it was active.

Now, when someone brings me an infected PC, I pull the hard drive and
install it as a slave into a service machine. Then I can access the
folders and delete the whole "Temporary Internet Files" folds and ZAP!
Everything is gone, (but not wiped.)

After that, then it is time to scan the drive with Anti Virus and Anti
Spy. It 's very effective.
