content.ie5 and temporary internet files

Hi,

I may have mis-understood this but am I right in thinking that the
"temporary internet files" folder you see in explorer actually takes
its files from the a series of hidden folders (named with random
sequences) under content.ie5? These files will have names like
icon[1].gif but will appear in explorer as icon.gif

What i'm trying to do is read the attributes of those files - but the
date/times don't match. I searched all the \content.ie5 subfolders and
there is only one occurrence of the file in question.

any idea why this is?

No. You're close though.

There are different files in
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
and
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.ie5\random_name

You may have as many as four random_name folders under Content.IE5,
depending on when you open Content.IE5. I.e you just cleaned out
Content.IE5 and opened one webpage or opened Help and Support or Outlook
Express, etc.

Why would there need to be more than one file?

Are you asking this because of the [1]?

I forgot this.

Under this key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Paths
The Directory value specifies the path to Content.IE5.

These four keys relate to the four folders under Content.IE5...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Paths\path1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Paths\path2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\

thank you for that - very helpful. Two more questions if you don't
mind;

What's the significance of [1] and [2] etc in the filenames?

I've written a program (vb.net) to pull details of a particular file
but the "date last accessed" property doesn't match the date I see in
explorer - even if I check hours later.

thanks

What's the significance of [1] and [2] etc in the filenames?

I would assume that if there is a file with [2] in its name, there must also
be a file with same name and [1] also. Not that I really care about that
particularly. It's all just Temporary crap.

For one thing, Outlook Express creates zero byte files named [1], [2], [84]
et cetera, with no other characters in the name. I have [1] thru [17] in
8LQJCTQV, [1] thru [84]in E9076D4Z and [1] thru [25] in KT6FG9YZ right now.
You get one for every newsgroup message read.

Content.IE5 is 911 KB right now, I haven't cleaned it out this morning.
Make that 917KB now. Make that 1.94 MB right now. LOL 112 KB now, I just
cleaned it out. And that's because index.dat is 112 KB. I'll delete that
baby in a while.

I do not know the significance of the [1] in a file named contents91[1].gif.
The .tmp files do not have them; wbk1E.tmp, wbk107.tmp, wbkB4.tmp,
wbkFF.tmp, etc. Most of these .tmp files are being created by my writing
THIS message.

I have no files with [2] in the name right now except the three mentioned
above.

Anytime you open a webpage, everything that you see is downloaded into the
TIF. As mentioned above OE creates all kinds of temporary crap in the TIF.
So does Help and Support and other programs.

The only time I care what's in the TIF is when I want to drag a movie or
song to my Desktop when the webpage thinks that they have prohibited me from
saving a file. If they are gonna load it onto my machine, it is mine.

Seriously, why do you care about filenames, etc. on this temporary crap?
Inquiring minds want to know. ;-)
