updating antispyware fails

joe

I've just installed the "new" 1.0.615 beta1 version. My
internet connection works fine for everything else
(email, browser, etc), but the AutoUpdater says it cannot
check for updates because it does not detect an internet
connection.
Can anyone help?

I also have the same problem and was told to make sure my
IE is not checked "Worked Offline" which it ISN'T. Anyone
can help with this problem?????

Usually time cures this problem. The message is unclear---any interruption
between you and the server will cause this. You should be sure you are not
blocking the spynet.com domain in a hosts file or other protection intended
to keep you safe from "bad" domains.

Bill: I checked the HOSTS file and nothing there. The only
other thing I have a XP firewall enabled. I added MSAS to
the list of programs not to be clocked by the XP firewall
and still no luck.
Any other thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

The XP firewall shouldn'g block anything outbound. What antivirus vendor
and product do you use?

I have this problem on 2 computers that I have been
cleaning up of malware. Both had outdated McAfee
firewall. Other computers I have worked on this week did
not have this issue. I tried resetting Winsock. And am
about to try steps from KB 817571 as suggested in a
previously posted question.

The spynet.com domain is part of Savvis - which often
hosts SPAM, et Al. spynet.com's address is: 216.32.240.29.

Questions to ask...
How big is the spynet.com domain?
Is spynet.com just 216.32.240.29?
Is the ISP/or personal firewall blocking this domain?

I'd check carefully to see whether there's anything of McAfee still lying
around.

I've not used the procedure in that KB article--looks like work.

I believe I've had situations where resetting TCP/IP in addition to
resetting Winsock was needed--that's probably in that article.

Savvis does load-balancing work for Microsoft, and uses Windows machines to
do so, rather than Linux, as a previous vendor doing such work did.

Microsoft owns and operates the destination servers reached at Spynet.com.

I would be surprised it that single IP were constant. I expect this stuff
is geographically distributed.

By chance, have you installed CounterSpy Anti Spyware? I
tried CounterSpy out on a trial version, and it screwed up
the auto-updater as you described. It then went on to
really screw-up other features on MSAS. I deleted
CounterSpy, and everything is now OK. Upon looking at the
CounterSpy download site, it says CounterSpy is not
compatible with MSAS at this time.
