Updating Anti Spyware Definitions

W

walkingshores

My definitions will update, but don't retain the update. I
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that worked
for about a day. First, everyday I had to update from 5729
to 5733. After uninstall and reinstall, now everyday I
have to update from 5733 to 5735. Has anyone else had this
type problem? If so, is there a solution? Thanks.

If you are running a build version of MSAS Beta 1 earlier than 1.0.614 (In
MSAS pull down the Help menu and select "About" to check), then download the
latest build of MSAS Beta 1 by following the links from
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/ and installing it.

Then see the first post dated July 9th in the thread "Definition update
recycling - Permanent Fix" in the group
"microsoft.private.security.spyware.announcements" and follow the steps
there to see if you need to update the file gcUnCompress.dll.

Then in control panel Internet Options, empty your Temporary Internet Files,
selecting "Delete all offline content" on the way.

Only then try to update the MSAS definitions.

If it still does not update correctly and permanently, then check the end of
the file errors.log in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ to
see if there any error messages dating from the time of the update. If
there are error messages there relating to the time of attempted update,
then just keep trying, about once per day. Eventually it will come right.

Will do. This is the version I am running:
Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.509
This version expires on: 7/31/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5735 (7/15/2005 2:22:43 PM)
Thanks.

I had 1.0.614 version when the problem started. Then
uninstalled and reinstalled the old version (thought I was
reinstalling newer version). I have not updated the new
version's defnitions, but have done all you suggested
except this part:

Explored this site but was unable to find the July 9
thread you were referring to. Please advise.

This is the version I have now: Microsoft AntiSpyware
Version: 1.0.614
Thanks.

Here's the bit you are missing--from Robin Walker as posted in .announcemets
on July 9.
------------------------------------------------
After much debugging, I have found that the problem with definition update
failures and repetition is because of an incorrect version of the file
gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ (for
2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of the file, do the
following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the MSAS icon and select
"Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate the file
"gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs", select "Microsoft AntiSpyware"
and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-clicking it and
selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check for updates" -
this time it really will update your definition files to the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware, and
satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three definition files
have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

You won't ever have to manually install the definition files again, nor will
the update keep repeating every time you try.
