Permanent Fix Isn't working on new definitions

J

JohnBurns

Today, my computers found Definitions 5735 on MSAS - and
downloaded them for me manually (from 5733 to 5735).
However, when I go back it updates from 5733 to 5735 each
time, even tho I had applied the permanent fix suggested
by Robin Williams. Any other suggestions to take me out
of the old loop routine? Appreciate any replies -
thanks.

I agree with you ,I spent a couple of hours last night
fixing a user's pc which had this fault ,All seemed well
when i left it,

Now she's contacted me and says its doing the exactly the
same thing but with the latest definitions,it updates to
5735 and if you use the help button then check about MS
Antispy its showing the latest file as installed (5735)
but if she shuts downs MS Antispy then reopens it and
tries the update again it keeps upgrading from 5733 to
5735

Im sorry i dont know what the solution is on this and
hopefully MS are going to fix it,its only a small bug but
its very annoying and it looks like its going to be the
same everytime the definitions are updated

Hopefully there's someone who can post a fix for this as
ive give up with this bug ,the only solution i know is to
remove MS Antispy and all the traces then do a fresh
install but surely they dont expect us to do that
everytime they release a update to the definitions ;)

Good Luck

Andy

Same here, but I re-ran Edward Lamarre's "Update Fix" (11th July post) and
I'm out of the loop.

Folks: you *MUST* empty your Temporary Internet Files (and select "Delete
all offline content") before attempting an MSAS definitions update.

I have just tried the 5755 updates while packet sniffing the network. If
you have (as I did) an earlier set of definitions still in your Temporary
Internet Files, then MSAS does not even bother asking the server for the
latest definitions: it usesd the stale version in the MSIE cache.

Once I cleared the Temporary Internet Files, the update to 5755 did the
server request properly, and the update to 5755 succeeded, permanently.

See my post "Why definition updates fail: possible reason" in this group on
28 June 2005.

Thanks for the Advise Robin

I will pass them on and hopefully it will end this
constant loop

Well...clearing the Temporary Internet Files is the
trick...of course, that is another bug that needs to be
fixed ;0) Is there a way to change that location so that
the file is deleted when the update occurs?

.....Maybe a .BAT file would do the trick?

I empty Temporary Internet Files often, so that wasn't my problem.
However, holding to the standard in these newsgroups of no problem
reports accepted without corrective code, I respectfully submit the
following for your consideration.

I found that 2 of the 3 files we were previously manually
downloading had been updated.

The old version of gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd remained.

Errors.log showed the following error:
0::Could not verify WinTrust::fileE:\Program Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\temp.zip::catalogE:\Program Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\temp.cat::gcTCPObjLib:modMain:VerifyCatalog::7/14/2005
4:52:27 PM:2000:1.0.614

Manually download gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd via this link:
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

All is well.

Hi Robin

For me ,It makes no difference and it still keeps looping
and trying to upgrade from 5733 to 5735

I opened a Internet window and went to Internet
Options,Deleted Cookies and Temp Files and included all
offline content then also went to start and run and typed
%temp% and cleared that folder,

Back to MSAS and update and it goes from 5733 to 5735
then once its finished i repeated the above for removing
temp files and tried it again on MSAS its still trying to
upgrade from 5733 to 5735 and once its finishes you dont
need to shut MSAS down you can go back to update and it
does it again and again

I will try clearing the prefetch files too and see if
that helps but it must be different for each user if you
are saying this has fixed the problem for you

Excellent diagnosis! This indicates that the cryptographic checksum failed
on one of the download files: there was a mismatch between the gc*.gcz file
(now in temp.zip) and the corresponding gc*.cat files (now in temp.cat).
Either the download of the .gcz file was corrupt, or the download of the
gc*.cat file was corrupt, or one of them was a stale copy from a web cache
somewhere.

So people who are having their definition updates failing might check the
end of their errors.log file to see if there is a similar error message
there.

Hello Robin,

I found on my system the thing that does the trick!

In Windows\installer there are a lot of maps with numbers
like:{77E70C3C-DBB9-4C47-8663-1E1F81FEC623}, ok, in installer i found a
thing searching for "GC", there was also some things from MSAS in so i
delete the map where it was in and try to update and yes it did!
So look in Windows\installer for "GC" and if you find the map with MSAS,
delete this map.

Can somebody test this!!!!!!

I just uninstalled my msas and in doing so I noticed that
microsoft has a very poor uninstaller, leaving about 14
program files and about 96 registry files still remaining
on my computer. I ran windoctor and regseeker and
regcleaner, all found many extra files left behind. I
deleted everything I found. I rebooted and went to
microsoft and downloaded a new copy of msas. Installed it
and it did the same thing with the update, so I am stumped
and will wait for a patch to repair it. I also deleted all
my temp and prefetch files. Unless you got any
other suggestions. Maybe the definitions themselves are
the problem.

Please check the last few entries in the file errors.log in the folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ for entries at the date and time of
your attempted updates.

You might see errors involving gcTCPObjLib which are causing the updates to
fail.

I followed Robin Walkers instructions earlier in the
week and I have just updated to 5735 with no problems.
Have checked and double checked and it's fine. Thanks

Hi I just found a fix thanks to Tom Emmelot im not sure
if ive deleted too much though so have just moved them
for now but its fixed the update bug

Like you say the error log shows many entries for

2146885629::Method '~' of object '~' failed::C:\Program
Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\temp.zip::C:\Program
Files\Microsoft
AntiSpyware\temp.cat::gcTCPObjLib:modMain:VerifyCatalog::1
4/07/2005 22:32:07:XP:1.0.614

Then opening the C:drive and windows folder and going
into the Installer folder i found a folder with this name

{536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3}

Inside that is :

ARPPRODUCTICON.exe

gcasSWUpdater.exe_536F7C74844B4683B0C5EA39E19A6FE3.exe

Shortcut1_536F7C74844B4683B0C5EA39E19A6FE3.exe

I copied the folder to my c:drive then deleted it from
the Installer folder

now its stopped looping and if i check for updates its
saying i have the latest installed

I will maybe put the folder back there when i know
exactly what the cause was but its a step closer to being
fixed or maybe ive just taken away its ability to update
im not sure as yet so will keep the original file for now

Andy

Thanks Tom !!

Hello All,

found a update fix that shall do the trick for the moment and maybe for
good!
This is tested on two computers at the moment!

In the map C:\Windows\installer there are a lot of maps with numbers
like:{77E70C3C-DBB9-4C47-8663-1E1F81FEC623}
Start searching for "GC",
then if one off the maps comes with those files:

ARPPRODUCTICON.exe
gcasSWUpdater.exe_536F7C74844B4683B0C5EA39E19A6FE3.exe
Shortcut1_536F7C74844B4683B0C5EA39E19A6FE3.exe

Delete the whole map with the number.

Then also clean all your internet tempfolders!

Then do the MSAS update!

And done.
