Unknown Publisher Error on Install

Attempting to download Defender (Beta 2) x86 to an XP machine. I receive an
unknown publisher message for WindowsDefender.msi. If I attempt to run
anyway I receive the following error dialog "The installation package could
not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid
Windows Installer package." Can only click the ok button and installation
aborts.

I am accessing this via Live OneCare...if that makes a difference.

Hello Moose,

Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Version 1.1.1347.0 is out.

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

Moose - I'd say this sounds like the download is corrupted in some way--I'd
re-download. Make sure that you save to some known location, perhaps the
desktop, and then double-click the saved file to initiate the install.

Thanks, got it to download. I was up-to-date with windows, moving the
download to the desktop fixed it.

Great - I don't know exactly what happens in these situations--I tend to
wonder whether there's some interaction with real-time scanning that's
looking at the download--in theory, the "run" just does a save to the
temporary internet files, then runs the file from there, so it should not be
different, but....
