Can't install Defender after download. Publisher problems.......

Hello everyone.

Has anyone have the same problem. I have my windows validated, I then to
proceed to download. Afterdownload I click WindowsDefender.msi to install,
but then it says: "This Installation package could not be opened. Contact
the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows intaller
package."

Thats my problem. Hopefully I can get this resolved.

Thanks--There may have been load issues involved in your experience--I know
I've seen some other reports of problems at some unspecified time in the
recent past--and they might well correspond to your problem.

There are some legit download sites--majorgeeks, filehippo, for example,
that also have links to Windows Defender downloads. I'm not sure how they
work, given the WGA restriction, but they are legit alternative sources.

OK -- here's the solution to my problem [and maybe Jeff's].
When I looked in my trash can I noticed that all the WindowsDefender files
I
downloaded were different sizes -- around 4.4 megs. I'd thought the
difference was explained by updates that MS had made.
Then I noticed that Defender was suppose to be more then 6 megs -- I
started
to wonder if I was downloading a complete install from MS. So I tried MS
two
more times and got files that were two different sizes 9again both around
4.4
megs]. Then I attempted to download to "Run" instead of "save to disk".
The
download would get to about 80 percent complete and then the install [or
run]
would begin. Clearly there was something wrong on MS's end -- I know thats
the case because I then went to two different torrent site and downloaded
a
good 6.557 meg install from both sites. Neither site interrupted my
download,
both downloads install.
Moral to the story? Maybe a MD5 check is a good idea.

I should also add that I have gotten this message when attempting to
install
from the "Run" option:
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I'm having the same problem on my machine running XP Pro, SP2 & all
updates
[including Windows Installer 3.1]. I've downloaded and attempted to
install 4
times in the past couple weeks -- an hour ago being my most recent
attempt.
I've attempted both a "save to file" or "run" install but get the same
message result Jeff has:
"This installation package can not be opened. Contact the application
vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."
Ideas anyone?
Suggestions as to where else I can go for a solution to this problem?
