Cannot install because unknown publisher

I have downloaded Windows Defender (Beta 2) to my desktop. When it tries to
install, a message comes up saying it is an unknown publisher and to contact
the product vendor. Is there anything I can do to get it to run?

From your description of this message, I would suspect a corrupted download,
and would suggest downloading again, saving to the desktop, and
double-clicking the file on the desktop.

If you again get this message via that procedure, post back to this thread
and ideally copy the message completely, so we can research it better.

I redownloaded Windows Defender x64 (Beta 2) and still got the same message.
Here is the message: "This installation package is not supported by this
processor type. Contact your product vendor."

I clicked on the link you gave me and downloaded that verizon. However, I am
still not able to run it. The message now says: "The installer has
encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a
problem with this package. The error code is 2881." Now what do I do.

That error would seem to indicate a bad download, just as I was thinking
from the first attempt. Can you describe your Internet connection? Are you
using any form of download manager or accelerator?

We use Sky Vista which is a satelite internet connection and my computer
picks up the signal wirelessly. I do not know about any download manager or
accelerator.

One possibility with any small ISP is a cache server that has a bad copy of
the code.

If another download gives the same result, it may be worth trying the
download via a reputable third-party download site.

Getting the download this way might work around the bad cache at the ISP.

You could also check with tech support at your ISP to see whether they think
there's any validity to this idea--they can correct the situation and it
would be a favor to all of their customers.

I have tried the link you gave me and I am still having the same problem.
This is taking too much of my time. What other products can offer the same
spyware protection for free?

I'm hoping others will chime in. I'm unaware of any other product providing
the level of real-time protection that Windows Defender does, so I don't
really have a response that is helpful.

I am having the same problem as Karen in that every time I download and try
to run it states the publisher could not be verified etc. I have an excellent
10m link and have never had download problems before and so would suggest
that there is another factor involved. I wished to use this software as I
suspect that I have spyware on my computer as it keeps slowing down with no
valid cause. Could the spyware guys be smart enough to get infront of this
download and what is the risk of running the prog if it is an unknown
publisher but downloaded from the link you have provided at microsoft.
