Wow, look there, bugs. Again, what's your point? I know you refuse to
believe it but linux has bugs as well.

Are you wanting us all to burn down our cities because a piece of software
has bugs? Get a clue!

Sorry, what I meant was that it is A legitimate name, not Alias'.
So is Harry Pitz. :)
Frank

LOL. I used to work with a guy named Harry Butz. His mail always came
in addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Harry Butz".

I also knew a person with the name "Blome" (often mispronounced Blow me)
who married into the Horne family (oftem mispronounced as Horny) and
hiphenated her last name. Now it's Blowme-Horny (spelling exagerated
for sake of joke).

There are some interesting names out there alright.

Tried that, it didn't work.
But really, who cares as it's nothing more than an exercise in futility.
Frank

Well, I'm curious, and if you went to the trouble of downloading/burning
the iso, I would think you'd want to figure out what is going on. What
happens if you try to run Ubuntu as a live CD?

That's the point Charlie. It won't run on LiveCD nor install when using
a Matrox P750 video card.
Vista however, has no problem with the P750 card.

??? What happens when you try to boot from the CD? In other words, how
can you tell this is a video card compatibility issue rather than some
other kind of problem?

Charlie, Frank never downloaded it and never ran the Live CD, much less
attempt to do anything but belch and snort.

I got a garbled unreadable monitor screen which I interrupted as not
recognizing the Matrox P750 video card. Vista had no such problem.
I then installed Ubuntu on another computer (installed, not LiveCD) with
an ATI 9600xt 256meg video card. The install went well. I then dl'ed the
122+ security updates that were available which left me in quite a
quandary. 122+ security updates? What is that all about? I thought
linux, according to all the linux apologists, was immune to security
problems.
Well, I knew they were lying!
Anyway, I did the 3d cubie flippin thingie until my finger got tired and
then uninstalled the OS.
Nice toy but who cares? I gave the CD to one of my associates and his
five year old son is addicted to the 3d cubie flippin thingie. Great
baby sitter he says!
End of story.

People on Usenet make extravagant claims because they don't have to back
them up. No OS is inherently bulletproof. But, the people who are
writing malware, scripts to set up botnets etc., are focused on Windows
because that's what 9+ out of 10 users have. That might change if Linux
grabs a larger chunk of the desktop market. But it's easier for
developers to come up with security fixes if they can examine the source
code... that is the real security benefit conferred by Linux vs. Windows.

Sure. Enthusiasts will always be happy to have the latest new thing,
even if it involves a fair outlay of time and money. But others, like
myself, only want to invest time and money if there's a more tangible
payoff. That's reason number one why I don't like Vista... it's a
replacement for something that doesn't need replacing. Reason number two
is that Microsoft has tightened its EULA to the point where users have to
accept being permanently leashed to a license server. That may work for
you, but not for me.

Ubuntu may be oversold by its advocates, but it is a solid, very stable
operating system with plenty of good supporting applications. If its got
some gaps, they will be addressed in due course. By switching to Ubuntu,
I'm going with an OS that will undergo steady, iterative development
rather than wholesale revamping at intervals determined by Microsoft's
need to keep shareholders happy.
