"unable to choose recipients"

H

Hockeynut

I just started getting this yesterday. I uninstalled 2 updates
(neither of which was labeled KB933928!) that automatically downloaded
and installed yesterday. Not knowing what they actually contained, I
uninstalled them anyway, and eventually Windows Mail worked again. I
did not take note of the numbers of thosae 2 updates.

All of a sudden, this morning, at startup, updates were automatically
downloaded and installed, so I uninstalled them (again, no reference
to KB933928). Trying to create a new email, clicking the "To:"
button, continued to generate the "unable to choose recipients" msg.

I modified Windows Update to "not automatically download and install
updates" to hopefully prevent this. After restarting, I continue to
have the issue, and the updates "were not installed".

As part of the same problem, I assume, is the fact that I can not
create a "new contact".

Regarding several previous group posts, I "do not" use Norton or
McAfee. I use Spysweeper and Trend Micro.

Can somebody please help with this? I need to be able to create new
emails for my business. Thanks.

A recent version of the Trend antivirus software (details not available)
also created assorted problems in Windows Mail, and must be uninstalled,
not just disabled to stop them.

You may also need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.

You may also need to click on Tools, then Windows Contacts, then right
click in the empty right part of the new window, then click on Customize
This Folder, then the triangle, then Contacts, then Apply, then OK, then
the X at the top right of the Contacts window.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus program
that doesn't cause such problems. I recommend either avast! or AVG,
either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that
scans
email. Start here, but note that for a business you don't qualify for the
free
versions and need to use a paid version instead.

You might also want to check if the Google Toolbar program is installed,
and if so, uninstall it since it causes problems in Windows Mail.

Hi, Robert,

I just uninstalled Trend Micro, and restarted, and continue to get "unable
to choose recipients".

I have had the Google toolbar for a couple of years now. This problem just
started yesterday, even though others apparently, from the groups, have had
the issue since last year.

Did the Google toolbar miraculously just yesterday start causing this
problem for every individual that has it installed, as well as the piece of
crap Vista?

Also, I have many "accounts" (email addresses, both for my ISP and my web
site). Are you trying to say that all of these would all have to be deleted
(and hence the corresponding emails?), and re-created? Microsoft must
really want to screw everybody, when all new PCs are preloaded with that
"piece of crap" Vista.

There has to be a much more efficient solution, other than all of these
deletions, and/or going to Windows Live mail. Ideas, anybody?

In Windows Mail (like OE), deleting an account does not delete any
emails. This is unlike Windows Live Mail which closely associates accounts
with account folders.
Microsoft must really want to screw everybody, when all new PCs are preloaded with that "piece of crap" Vista.

That doesn't make sense. Why would Microsoft want to anger its customers?
Most Vista users have a good experience with it. Any problems are
usually due to old software or non-compatible third party security products.
A new OS always goes through a transition period.
There has to be a much more efficient solution, other than all of these deletions, and/or going to Windows Live mail. Ideas,
anybody?

Why the reluctance to going with Windows Live Mail?

can take months to show up.

Have you had the Google Toolbar under Vista for a few years now?

MS isn't likely to fix Windows Mail, since it hasn't been updated in the
past year, and since Windows Live Mail has been released (and works better).

Have you tried doing it backwards?
Open Windows Contacts, select your recipients, and click on "Email" on the

Success! I uninstalled both KB905866 and KB946041 and am now able to access
my email addresses.. I think the problem lies with KB905866 but will do some
further checking until I know for certain. In the meantime I'll add these two
updates to my post-it that says do not download KB933928 and get back to
work. Sure hope this helps some of you!!!

This is a short term fix at best. You cannot keep uninstalling Windows
updates. Some of them are rather critical.
Upgrade to Windows Live Mail which is better supported:

Installing Windows Live mail usually imports any accounts you already
have set up in Windows Mail.

If you need to ask for more help for Windows Live Mail, you'll get

It does everything Windows Mail does, plus a few extras.
Yes, you can use your existing email address with Windows Live Mail.

Well, I have a really great idea!!!!!!!!! why don't you explain it!!!!
:

This is a short term fix at best. You cannot keep uninstalling Windows
updates. Some of them are rather critical.
Upgrade to Windows Live Mail which is better supported:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

-- My plan is to continue installed all updates that do not effect my email program. If I change to Windows Live can I
still
use my old email address? My email goes through our local service provider and they give us free email accounts. I've had
this
address for 10 years and don't want to do away with it as it would be a Major amount of work. And.if my new email address
would be Hotmail, No Thanks.
Your thought please....

:

MS isn't likely to fix Windows Mail, since it hasn't been updated in the
past year, and since Windows Live Mail has been released (and works better).

Have you tried doing it backwards?
Open Windows Contacts, select your recipients, and click on "Email" on the
toolbar.

Hi, Robert,

I just uninstalled Trend Micro, and restarted, and continue to get
"unable
to choose recipients".

I have had the Google toolbar for a couple of years now. This problem
just started yesterday, even though others apparently, from the groups,
have had the issue since last year.

Did the Google toolbar miraculously just yesterday start causing this
problem for every individual that has it installed, as well as the
piece
of crap Vista?

[snip]
Many problems caused in Windows Mail don't show up at once, and
can take months to show up.

Have you had the Google Toolbar under Vista for a few years now?

Hello fellow Vista users! I've been having this problem since I bought
my HP computer loaded with Vista. I have kept the "ask me first" option
turned on always but somehow my computer developed a mind of it's onw and
downloaded this pain in the neck! I can't even find it listed in my down
load history so I can uninstal

It's just an email program. There is no harm in trying it. If it turns
out
you don't like it, merely uninstall, and Windows Mail is back as your
default email program.

You and Robert are certainly assuming alot!!!! i have no idea where to
get
Windowms mail live or whatever the heck it's called. I'm totally
unfamiliar
with
what is needed to change programs and don't have the time needed to become

Not sure why you think you lost anything. WLM only copies, it does not
remove the original Windows contacts from C:\Users\username\Contacts .
WLM can also do a manual import from Windows Contacts.
