"unable to choose recipients"

T

Thomas Hupfeld

In the middle of today, after having used Windows Mail all morning, when I
tried to create another mail, and clicked the "To" button, I got the "unable
to choose recipients" message.

I did not manually install Windows updates. But, when I went to Windows
Update, there apparently was one "automatically" loaded without me realizing
it.

I went in, and uninstalled it, but still get the error message. I can
create emails, however, if I simply start to key in a contact's email
address. Also, if I open "Windows Contacts", select a contact, and click
E-Mail, a new email window opens, with the To recipient pre-filled.

BTW, KB933928 was not the update that was listed in Windows Update, so that
shouldn't be causing the problem. Thoughts?

The contacts folder occasionally gets changed to the wrong type of folder,
which causes assorted problems with contacts. If you suspect that this
has happened, start Windows Mail, then click on Tools, then Windows
Contacts, then right click in the empty space under the right end of the
toolbar in the contacts window, then click on Customize This Folder,
then the triangle to the right of the folder type, then Contacts, then
Apply,
then OK, then close the contacts window.

Also, when clicking on To:, make sure that you do not type any part of
the address first.

I had the same problem as Mr Hupfield. I tried the steps suggested by Mr.
Miles, but no success. I still get "unable to choose recipients". I went
deleted all the installations from 5-30-08 (that is when the problem began),
but still no success. Any suggestions anyone?

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not compatible with Windows Mail.

Norton is one of the three brands of antivirus products that often cause
problems with Windows Mail. As a minimum, you must disable email
scanning in any antivirus. For Norton, that is frequently not sufficient.
IF so, that leaves two options:

Uninstall Norton, then follow up with their debris removal tool:

If you like, we can recommend a compatible free antivirus.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is less
prone to developing problems from antivirus activity.

I used to be able to send new e-mails or forward e-mails by just going to my
contacts, clicking in the person I wanted to send it to and send. I am no
longer able to do this, I have to manually type in all of the contacts and
their e-mail addresses. Why?

Maybe because you don't know of the proper way to do those tasks?

Click on the word TO: in your new or forwarded mail, and it will bring up
the address book for you to choose recipients from.

HTH?
