Two SP2 Proroblems

M

Matt Wills

Since installing SP2 on two machines in the house, I have
encountered these issues. Nothing affesting performance
to my knowledge, but all are annoyances nonetheless:

1. On both the eMachines desktop and the Compaq laptop, I
get this error when I open Control Panel:

"An error occurred while Windows was working with the
Control Panel file C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsetup.cpl."

Clicking OK dismisses the error, and Control Panel opens.

2. Both machines have NAV 2004, and everything is
current. The laptop works fine, but on the desktop, the
Security Center says the status of NAV is unknown.

3. On the laptop, certain taskbar icons (most notably, the
Power) arbitrarily disappear from the notification area,
despite being clearly set to "Always Show".

1 and 3 are clearly problems with SP2 (both go away if I
uninstall it), and it would seem that 2 is as well.

Does anyone have similar experience? More important, does
anyone have any ideas as to how to fix?

For 1) --> START -> RUN -> type in MSCONFIG -> select START UP -> uncheck
IPMON32 -> select APPLY -> RESTART COMPUTER.

For 2) --> Symantec would love for you to purchase NAV 2005. Otherwise,
ignore and tell the system YOU will be monitoring your AntiVirus solution.

For 3) --> Hmm.. No idea.. Have you changed the staus to "never show" and
rebooted, changed them to "always show" then rebooted just to see if
"cycling" has any effect?

OK, that did it. Many thanks.

I don't get it. Why does it work properly on one machine,
and not work on another?

That's what I have to do to get it back. Somewhat a pain.
This did not happen before SP2.

Nothing. Still displays the error.

Don't get it. Why would the same program behave
differently on different machines? And since NAV is up to
date on both, what's to say it isn't a fault in SP2?

No effect. I still the error.

NAV is up to date on both machines, so my first impulse
is to blame SP2. Why either would work differently on
twomachines running the same system is a mystery.

That's how I have to fix it.Like I said, an annoyance.

Run LiveUpdate on the machine with "unknown" status.
<quoted from Symantec Support>
Q: Why does the Windows Security Center say that the
status of my Norton security product is "unknown."
A: Your Norton security products contain tamper
protection features that prevent malicious code from
determining their status. This tamper protection also
prevents the Windows Security Center from determining the
status of your Norton security products. Shortly after
Microsoft releases Service Pack 2, Symantec will make a
correction available through LiveUpdate. This correction
will allow the Windows Security Center to correctly
identify the status of your Norton security products.

Did as suggested, still the same.

I don't know the exact date, but various things suggest
SP2 was released (or at least known to be coming) over a
month ago. I saw an overview dated August 4.

I have to wonder what Symantec's definition of "shortly"
might be. That the question is still showing on their FAQ
would suggest that they have yet to issue the fix.
