I have the problem described on at this knowledge base..

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;817589

My card will operate for about half an hour maximum
before displaying the problem described.

Why on earth is the fix for this kept from us via the
need for us to call Microsoft and risk the need to pay
them support fees?

I tried using the online support system but because I've
an OEM version on windows XP from a small company without
a 24hr tech line im stuck waiting to see if they can help
me (I'm betting they can't).

There are problems where a fix is developed, but not yet fully tested in
the field. MSoft does not want this on the regular Update site to be
installed by those not suffering, in case there are problems. So it is
made available on request - all you need do is say immediately that you
want this fix because you are suffering the specific problem, and ask
for nothing else, and you will not be charged. If you do not like that
you can wait until it *has* been fully verified and appears on Update
