TV Tuners and hyper-threading

Hey all,

I've been having some problems with my ATI TV Tuner
crashing my computer and ATI suggested it might be due to
a flaw in XP that causes TV Tuners to crash when run on a
system that has hyper-threading technology
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;817589). The knowledge base article says there is a
fix, but I have to call support to get it and thus I will
have to be charged money for something that MS screwed up
in the first place. Has anyone else had to deal with this
issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

Lets get something straight ***hole!

Windows XP has been out for over 2 years now. Hyper-
threading was not in use when the O/S came out. Yet you
think that it is Microsoft's fault that hyper-
threading "MAY" cause your ATI video card to malfunction.

You certainly ARE f***ed up!

The following note in that article provides your answer:

"Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily
incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft
Support Professional determines that a specific update
will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do
not qualify for the specific update in question."

I haven't called for this specific update, but I've
called in the past for hotfixes like this. As long as
you mention you're looking for this fix, and don't ask
about anything else, you won't be charged...I've never
been charged for getting a hotfix.

I had the same problem and ATI referred me to the Knowledge Base article. I
e-mailed Microsoft, got a pretty prompt reply, and was given two seven day
passwords for the hotfix, which I believe is still in beta. It seems to
have cured the spontaneous rebooting and system freezing. I found out that
you are allowed two free support calls, after which the $35 per incident
charges will apply. If the Support Professional can waive the fee, that's
even better.

Why do some people just assume that Microsoft is out to get them?
