Trouble with IE6 sp1 on XP

Howard Woodard

I run XP Pro sp1 and IE 6 sp1. I've been reading as many threads as possible and researching the kb looking for the reason that I can't access certain web sites. I ran across a thread which sounded like [maybe] the same problem and it referenced a kb that suggested applying patch 813951. I checked my installed software and didn't see this patch. I tried to apply it but it wouldn't install -- said that it required IE6, sp1 with Q810847. Q810847 doesn't show up on my installed software list either. I followed the link to Q810847 and it said to make sure that IE6 Sp1 was installed first. I downloaded the file and when the install started it said that it needed to download another file from the internet first. It then downloaded "Internet Explorer 6 Web browser" and started setup. After a short time it quit with the error "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. The software cannot be installed".

There is no entry for Internet Explorer in my installed programs list but it is on my machine, it works, and when I check about it shows that it is IE6 Sp1 w/128 bit encryption.

I religously apply all critical updates and when I check the Windows Update site it shows no updates available.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

I not too personal, can you post a couple of these sites? I can check them with my
IE and another browser I use to see if I get the same results.

Thanks for your offer. The particular site is hpshopping.com but right now
I'm kinda diverted by the problems installing/patching IE right now.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening when I try to apply the patch or
re-sownload/install IE?

Go to Windows Update and install all the critical updates it offers.

Thanks Frank. As I indicated on my original note, I keep all updates
applied regularly and right now there are none showing up as
available/required/recommended.

However, I do think there's something screwy with my IE6 installation. All
of the articles in the KB make reference to going into the control panel/add
or remove software and removing the Internet Explorer SP1 entry. I don't
have an entry for that. Yet I can run IE and it shows up [under help] as
6.0 SP1.

When I tried to install IE from the web it downloaded and shortly after
starting the install quit with the error "The software you are installing
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows
XP. The software will not be installed." Then I was stuck, it wouldn't
install but every time I re-booted it attempted to continue the setup. I
found a KB article that said that this error would happen if you had
KB823559 installed and that the solution was to remove it and then
re-download the software from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en.

I did both but still get the "logo" error each time.

I think those things may be a red herring. Why doesn't "Internet Explorer
SP1" show up in my installed software list like the KB articles suggest it
should?
