Antivirus by it's nature have to be fairly aggressive and email clients
and servers can be sensitive to "Timing" and the flow of data, so if an
antivirus tries to pull a mail out of an incoming stream from the server
it can upset that flow. This can also have an impact if mails are stored
in a database like Outlook Express used to store them. If the antivirus
suddenly pulls out an infected piece of a mail the data store can become
corrupt.

Having you incoming mail checked sounds like a good idea, but from
experience it is only a matter of time before something like this goes
wrong, and your active protection knows about exactly the same viruses
so having your emails scanned as they come in really adds nothing but
extra risk.

Viruses and other malicious software do tricky things; the better that
antivirus programs get, the more complicated and advanced that malicious
software must be. To be most effective, they (the malicious software and the
anti-malicious software) must do undocumented things within Windows.
Originally, Windows was not designed for security but Microsoft is improving
security in each new version of Windows.

If software developers are sloppy, they can easily make mistakes and those
mistakes can be very costly. Management attempts to avoid paying the price.
Well-organized and careful developers are costly; if management does not
understand the value of good developers, then they will employ or use
lower-quality developers and they will avoid dealing with the costs that
result from that.

There is one company in particular that I know provides long technical
instructions for their customers to use to fix problems caused by the
company's software. They don't pay for inexpensive script programmers that
can automate the process so their customers are not inconvenienced. That
shows a strong disregard of quality. They continue to sell software only due
to their reputation, and their reputation is quickly being destroyed by
themselves. When experts here say that an antivirus software often causes
problems, they have ample justification for saying that from past
experiences.

We can't help without more details.
Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so, right-click
on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here. We
can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.
