Is the "Windows Live OneCare clean up scanner " legit? I remember how
controversial reg. cleaners were in the past, I'm wondering if this one is
okay.

I've cleaned my registry with programs, and I own newsbin pro, a
licensed newsreader. Seems one cleaner, one day, did a good job of
cleaning, but as soon as I launched newsbin after that, I had to
re-enter my license. No big issue, but it points out that something
got hosed that should not have. I've stopped doing this now, and am
greatful that it was not a huge OS required set of entries!!!!

Inclusion of the registry cleaner followed a months-long tug of war between
the devs and the beta testers with MS finally giving in and implementing it.
It is legit but its need is still controversial among users. Registry
cleaning was a religion with Win9x/ME users and made some sense because of
space limitations but none of the Win9x/ME justifications apply to the NT
branch of Windows. Nevertheless you still see a ton of users who don't
realize that and demand a reg cleaner for XP. Old habits (and fears) die
hard. Use it or not as you like.
