The Start / Run list... URL's ??

D

DavidJ726

Why is it when I select Start / Run and start typing in a command such as
services/msc, I'll get a rather large list of "options" that includes,
(amongst the programs I've ran from Run / Start), a list of URL's that I've
visited, or recent documents that's been opened, etc...

I never really thought of it, but it seems that the Run command should be
limited to programs that were run from the Start / Run button. Should I be
seeing all of these files and URL's from the run command button ?

Thanks,

David...

It's called the Run MRU. Most Recently Used.

To see the entries no more... until it starts filling up again...

Clear IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the Run MRU, Typed
URL's and Clear List:

XP Start Menu:
You have to switch to Classic long enough to get the Clear button.
Right click the Start button | Properties | Select Classic Start Menu |
Customize button | Clear button | Click OK | Select Start menu | Click Apply
|Click OK

Classic Start Menu:
Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | Clear button

Clear button
[[Removes the list of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites
from the Documents menu.]]
-----

Run MRU here...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
and the corresponding HKEY_USERS key.

Because you can open *almost* anything from the Run command.

[[You can open a file or folder or connect to a shared computer by typing
its path in the Open box. You can also connect to an Internet or intranet
site; for example, to reach the Microsoft Web site, type www.microsoft.com
in the Open box. ]]

To start a program by using the Run command

Yes. Seeing that list is normal if autocomplete is turned on Folder Options
and/or Internet Explorer. You can clear the list by clearing history in
Internet Options.

The information comes from two separate areas:

1. RunMRU entry in the registry. This can be cleared by editing the
registry, or by clearing the Recent documents list in the Start Menu and
Taskbar Properties.

Display, Use, and Clear "My Recent Documents" on the Start Menu in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307875

2. The entries that appear when you type something (but not normally
displayed when you click the drop-down), comes from the Index.dat (Internet
Explorer's) file. Clearing the Index.dat should help.

See MVP Mike Burgess' page: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

-or-

Uncheck Use Autocomplete for "Web addresses" in IE Options Content tab
(AutoComplete settings dialog). FYI, unchecking this option, disables the
CTRL + ENTER (autosuggest) functionality in Intenret Explorer.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I've kind of viewed the run "button" to
be a "mini" command prompt... open a full screen command prompt, start an
install, run a *.msc program, etc... not as a means to open documents, web
pages, etc... Just one more thing I've learned today. And while I'm on the
fence still in regards to auto-complete, I like having recent documents so I
guess I won't worry about it.

Seems like I can't have my Kate & Edith too...
